Hidden Gems: Meet Jose Mendez of JayGo Painting

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jose Mendez

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Jose Méndez, and I own JayGo Painting, a house painting company.

In November 2021, I was working for someone who faced various challenges, especially financial ones. After more than five years working for him, he suddenly stopped answering my calls and gave no explanation, even though he had once called me an essential part of his company. That experience led me to take a leap and start my own business. I had the skills to do the work, manage projects from start to finish, and select the right products, but I didn’t know how to run a business.

Fortunately, I’m self-motivated to learn. I began taking courses, attending seminars, and reading books. All of this led me to connect with a group of fellow entrepreneurs and good friends. We regularly support each other in tackling the challenges of running a business. Today, after three years, we’re a team of four dedicated professionals with a 5-star rating on Google. The journey has been challenging, but my dream is to build a well-known brand and company, and that’s what drives me forward every day.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Reflecting on my journey, I can honestly say it hasn’t always been smooth, but each challenge has taught me valuable lessons. Starting a business, particularly in the house painting industry, requires resilience and adaptability. Early on, I faced hurdles in establishing trust with clients and standing out in a competitive market. There were times when projects didn’t go as planned, ( being honest we are still struggling with this) or unexpected issues arose that tested my problem-solving skills. One of the biggest lessons l’ve learned is the importance of transparency and communication. By being upfront with clients about timelines, costs, and any potential issues, l’m still building a reputation but the one I built has become the backbone of my business. I also realized the value of continuous improvement, both in my skills and in the services we offer, to consistently meet and exceed client expectations. Looking back, while the journey has had its share of obstacles, each step has been essential in shaping both me and my business. I wouldn’t trade the hard times because they gave me the insights and resilience needed to grow and succeed.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about JayGo Painting ?
We are a house painting company specializing in interior and exterior residential painting. In addition to painting, we also handle kitchen cabinet refinishing. Currently, we are expanding our services to include drywall repairs and remodeling.

What sets us apart is our focus on customer service; I prioritize ensuring that clients have a positive experience with us. I’m proud that people often reach out to tell me they’ve seen our signs on the street or on social media. Our goal is to deliver high-quality services and meet our clients’ expectations.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Risk-taking is an essential part of any business journey, well not only in terms of business but in our daily life, and l’ve come to see it as a necessary ingredient for growth. Early on, I had to take significant financial risks, whether it was investing in quality equipment, marketing, or hiring skilled team members.
And on some occasions, I didn’t see that money come back, due to my lack of experience, each decision felt like a leap, but I believed in the long-term potential of my business, and I knew that without those investments, l’d be limiting my company’s growth. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned about risk is to balance it with preparation. I try to weigh the potential outcomes and make calculated decisions based on what’s best for the business in the long run. I also remind myself that some of the most successful moves come from taking risks, learning from failures, and refining the approach as I go. For me, risk-taking has been about finding the courage to step out of my comfort zone and having the resilience to adjust if things don’t go as planned. It’s a balancing act of vision and practicality, but ultimately, I believe that the willingness to take risks is what pushes a business toward real growth and innovation.
