Hidden Gems: Meet Joe Bermingham of Gay Vacation Travel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Bermingham.

Hi Joe, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I founded Gay Vacation Travel in June 2006 after recognizing a need for LGBTQ+ travelers to have more welcoming, community-focused travel experiences. While many travel options existed, there were few designed specifically to create a space where LGBTQ+ guests could truly feel comfortable, connected, and celebrated.

With a background in travel and years of industry experience, I set out to build more than just trips — I wanted to create thoughtfully curated group cruises, luxury tours, and hosted events that bring people together. From all-gay Caribbean cruises and bear cruises to European tours and yacht charters, every experience is carefully planned with exclusive events and social programming that foster genuine connections.

Nearly two decades later, Gay Vacation Travel has grown into a trusted brand and a loyal community, with many guests returning year after year. While the company has evolved, my mission remains the same: to deliver high-quality travel experiences where everyone feels welcomed, valued, and free to be themselves.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like most entrepreneurial journeys, it hasn’t always been a smooth road. Building a niche travel company — especially one focused on LGBTQ+ group travel — comes with unique challenges. In the early years, educating travelers about the value of hosted group experiences and earning long-term trust took time and consistency.

The travel industry itself is constantly changing, and navigating economic shifts, global events, and evolving traveler expectations has required adaptability and resilience. The pandemic, in particular, was one of the most challenging periods, forcing a complete pause in travel while still supporting clients, managing refunds, and planning for the future.

That said, each challenge helped strengthen the business. Staying flexible, maintaining strong relationships with suppliers and clients, and focusing on community over transactions allowed Gay Vacation Travel not only to survive, but to grow. Those experiences shaped how we operate today and reinforced the importance of trust, transparency, and personalized service.

We’ve been impressed with Gay Vacation Travel , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Gay Vacation Travel is a boutique travel company specializing in all-gay group cruises, hosted vacations, and luxury travel experiences for the LGBTQ+ community. As founder and owner, my role goes far beyond trip planning — I oversee every aspect of the business, from itinerary design and supplier relationships to onboard programming, guest experience, and long-term brand strategy.

What sets our business apart is the focus on community and personalization. Each sailing or tour is carefully curated with private events, themed parties, hosted gatherings, and thoughtful details that turn a vacation into a shared experience. I work closely with cruise lines, hotels, and local partners to ensure our guests receive both value and exclusivity.

Over the years, the company has grown through reputation and repeat travelers rather than volume. Many guests return year after year, and that loyalty is something I take great pride in. Professionally, my focus has always been on consistency, trust, and delivering a high-quality experience that reflects both professionalism and heart.

Gay Vacation Travel continues to evolve, but the foundation remains the same: creating welcoming, well-organized travel experiences where LGBTQ+ travelers can connect, relax, and feel completely at home.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I love most about Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and Wilton Manors is the diversity, energy, and strong sense of community. South Florida offers an incredible mix of international culture, coastal living, and entrepreneurial spirit, while Wilton Manors stands out as a welcoming and vibrant LGBTQ+ hub where community truly matters. That combination makes it an ideal place to live and build a business centered on connection and travel.

What I like least is the fast pace and congestion that come with such popular and growing cities. Traffic and constant activity can be challenging at times, but they’re also signs of how dynamic and in demand the area has become. Overall, the positives far outweigh the challenges, and South Florida continues to be both inspiring and energizing.
