Hidden Gems: Meet Edgar Sanchez of Proyecto UMO

Today we’d like to introduce you to Edgar Sanchez.

Hi Edgar, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am originally from Guayaquil, Ecuador, and moved to the US for college as an international student. Graduated from FIU and got a work visa from a Logistics company here in Miami. I have been working on the Logistics Industry for over five years, I find it fascinating to be able to move goods across the world.

About two years ago, I decided to explore my passion for cooking and to experience what it was like to work in a professional kitchen. Chef Carey was kind enough to make me part of his team, but I had to start as a dishwasher. I remember walking into my interview at the restaurant wearing a 3-piece suit while Chef was wearing different color socks and crocks.

What are you doing here? – He asked
I just wanna cook – I replied

Being part of Jaguar Sun’s kitchen has been one of the and most fulfilling experiences of my life. While working my Logistics job and cooking at Jaguar, I had the idea of a launching a conscious business that will allow me to connect to my country & culture while being in Miami, that is where Proyecto UMO was born.

Following a One for One business model, UMO is a company and a reforestation project at the same time. We have planted over 100 trees in Ecuador and we are just getting started. I never thought that I was going to call Miami home, but I am grateful to be here. This is the city is special.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road is what we make of it, and like any other wave in this universe, we are going to have our ups and downs. I am loving my journey by choosing to grow through it and taking everything as a lesson. Being away from home is never easy, but surrounding myself with amazing people has made this road so much fun!

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Proyecto UMO is a conscious business where we work to benefit our customers and our community/environment. We commercialize Palo-Santo products.

Palo-Santo is a sacred wood that, when burned, emits a blissful aroma. It is believed that the smoke released cleanses and neutralizes energies. The oil of this wood is rich in terpenes such as Limonene & A-Terpineol, which have analgesic & anti-inflammatory properties.

At UMO, we care about sustainability. Our packaging is made out of sugar cane fiber and vegetable ink, making it safe organic material for composting. We are committed to plant a Palo Santo tree in Ecuador for every purchase.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Sometimes I cook at @JaguarSunMia.
