Hidden Gems: Meet Dr. Sharif Tabbah of Alkeme Sports Rx

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Sharif Tabbah.

Dr Sharif Tabbah

Dr. Tabbah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up between Connecticut and New York and was always active playing sports. When I went to UConn for my business degree, I became a personal trainer and fell in love with fitness and anatomy.

Along the way, I was exposed to the Physical Therapy (PT) profession by a client of mine who was a young sports PT and who told me I, too, would make a great PT. This piqued my interest, and before I knew it, I had become a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and was graduating from New York University with my Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2012.

I then moved to Miami to pursue my dream of working with professional athletes, especially NFL football athletes. After four years working in a facility doing exactly that, I opened my first Sports PT clinic in Miami in 2016, which quickly grew into multiple locations.

At Alkemē Sports Rx, our mission has been to create rehab and performance facilities for both competitive athletes and athletic-minded individuals who want more than what the traditional PT clinic can offer them.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road to success is never smooth and never ends, but your ability to withstand the endless bumps determines your degree of success. One of my early challenges was balancing the demands of our professional athlete clients with my desire to serve the entire local fitness community.

I quickly learned that the only way to make it all work was to build a strong team around me and to always be improving our systems and our services. Finding new ways to recruit the right people and better understand their needs and desires has been a challenge but also a learning experience.

Another major challenge was when we faced a rebrand in mid-2023, changing our company name and branding to Alkemē Sports Rx after eight years of operating under a different name. Although challenging, it was also fun to return to the infancy stage as a brand, but this time, with eight years of experience behind us to propel us into the future.

We’ve been impressed with Alkeme Sports Rx, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share about what you do and what sets you apart?
Alkemē Sports Rx are sports physical therapy and performance facilities with locations in Davie and Brickell. ALKEMĒ is the phonetic spelling of Alchemy, which is defined as “a seemingly magical process of transformation, combination or creation.”

We honor this meaning by continuing to help thousands of active individuals transform to a higher level of function through the combination of rehab, injury prevention, exercise recovery, and performance training. SPORTS RX represents our dedication to serving athletic-minded individuals who value their health, active hobbies, and physical performance above all. Therefore, we will only accept the best care available.

Too often, people settle for average physical therapy consisting of passive modalities, cookie-cutter exercises, and overbooking of patients. This is why we created Alkemē Sports Rx to offer an alternative to the norm, one that promises individualized care that is customized to each individual’s needs, ensuring we help them get back to their sport or activity.

Unlike most physical therapy clinics, the Alkemē facilities are set up more like gyms with high-performance amenities designed to allow us to truly help our patients get back to their sport or activity safely. From amenities like a full gym, pool, hot tub, ice bath, basketball courts, turf fields, batting cages, and tennis courts, we help our patients get back to their activity by progressively returning to it while under our guidance.

Our unique approach to both physical therapy and performance training has caught the attention of major media over the years, as we have been featured on ESPN, Sportscenter, Wall Street Journal, Monday Night Football, Sunday Night Football, and more. This has undoubtedly been one of the proudest moments in my career, as is the consistent trust of many of the world’s top athletes.

What makes you happy?
What makes me happy is the satisfaction of helping injured athletes not only get back to what they love doing but also make them better than they were before the injury.

Nothing speaks to this more than when a patient comes to us for an injury but then stays on as a performance client or returns to us in the future for other injuries. This reinforces the positive impact that we had on both their life and their performance.
