Hidden Gems: Meet Dr. Patricia Timerman of Advocate2Create, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Patricia Timerman.

Dr. Patricia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I guess I have to say I started at the age of 14, when I first moved to the U.S. from Brazil with little grasp of the English language, leading me to lose my voice. I believe that the impact of having lost my voice greatly influenced my desire to have a voice and help others find theirs. Today, through my firm Advocate2Create, we provide psychotherapeutic services to help people find their voices, identify healthy boundaries, and apply them to foster healthy relationships. I believe that experience also influenced my fascination with communication, leading me to create the IAP model of communication: Intention, Action, Perception, and write the book “Why Are We Fighting? Actionable Strategies for Effective Communication.”

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Has it been a smooth road? It depends on which point of view I decide to take. Psychology was never something I had thought about, a profession I wanted to pursue. If I were to follow the steps my family had set out for me, then I was destined to be a medical doctor, but somewhere along the way things changed. I guess I needed to deviate from the path set out for me, to find the path that was meant for me. While I was pursuing pre-med, I was also active in advocacy, making sure I had a voice. I was engaged in student government and active in local politics and participated in a myriad of volunteering and advocacy programs. My BA is actually in political science. After graduating from NYU, I did not get into the Medical School I wanted, so I took a pause from my Medical school journey and I stumbled upon a master’s degree in Mental Health and Marriage and Family Therapy. I pursued this degree, fully aware that I would go back to Medical School, but the joke was on me, because I not only fell in love with the mind, but I found a profession that allowed me to advocate with and for my clients and my community. My journey led me to create my firm Advocate2Create.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Advocate2Create is a psychotherapy firm. We provide individual and couples therapy, psychoeducational training for professionals and the community at large, and composition of clinical evaluations for immigration purposes. We specialize in working with adults struggling through anxiety, relationship issues, grief, suicide grief, and trauma. We also specialize on communication, using the IAP model – Intention, Action, Perception – I developed, from my book Why Are We Fighting? Actionable Strategies for Effective Communication, which can be found on Amazon. We also have and are creating videos for those who want to have access to coping strategies on the go and/or do not have time to attend therapy, which can be found that advocate2create.teachable.com. Professionals can also find psychoeducational training there. Furthermore, I am pleased to announce Advocate2Create Publishing, through which we published my book Why Are We Fighting? and are currently working on the audiobook version. Moreover, through Advocate2Create, I offer consultations and keynote speaking regarding the IAP model and all my areas of specializations. Overall, I am very proud of my team and of the work that we provide. We care for all our clients and partners because we love what we do.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I was on the Relationship Revival Podcast with Dr. Jon Dabach. In our interview, we started talking about love and he said that our source of love should not be human (only) because humans are limited. I started thinking about my source of love, and quickly became aware that my profession, the work I do, is a source of love because I have the benefit of loving what I do. I appreciate the complexities of the human mind and love exploring patterns to find effective strategies to manage what at times seems unmanageable. Even more so, I love to share what I see. Having a client or a friend express they have applied one of my strategies and that it has worked rocks my world. With that said, when I was asked why I wanted to publish my book, the answer was easy, because I truly believe in the IAP Model I have created and I want to share it with the world. So, I guess I have to say that the work that I do is a significant aspect of my happiness. Another significant aspect are the relationships and connections I have had in my life, because as a construct of my experiences, my relationships have been influential in the life that I live today.
