Hidden Gems: Meet Deeny Kaplan of The Kitchen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deeny Kaplan.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
At the age of 12, I was getting pies in the face every day, portraying a clown who thought she was Doris Day, on the local edition of a franchise series called “Bozo’s Big Top”, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After a few weeks, my dream of being an actress was overshadowed by the power and creativity I saw behind the scenes at “Bozo”. I wanted to direct, write and produce. And by the time I graduated high school, I had a very impressive career resume that landed me an appointment as the first female intern with the Westinghouse Broadcasting System in Pittsburgh and Boston. Pushing to graduate Emerson College in 3 years, while working full time at a local TV talk show as an assistant producer, in Boston, I had secured a position as an Assistant Producer with WABC-Radio in New York, and relocated to the Big Apple even before I graduated. As a communications major, I knew that radio would be a good learning experience and it was. Jumping a bit, I was a founding video editor of an industry trade magazine called Millimeter, where I had the privilege of introducing video to a steadfast film market. I then went on to be the founding editor of the industry’s first consumer video publication, called Video and if you read the Wikipedia stories about video games, you’ll see that I was the first to test and review the majority of them. My career also took me to the video post-production side of the business and when I relocated to Miami, I was selected as the county’s Film Commissioner, tripling the local production business. My husband, Ken Lorber, whom I met during my WABC days, and I, bought The Kitchen nearly 25 years ago, creating Miami’s leading language localization studio, competing only with Los Angeles for business. The Kitchen hold the distinction of being the only language dubbing studio to have received two Prime Time Emmy Awards for its technology. I can also add how proud I have been to simultaneously continue my writing career, and penned the 100th anniversary tribute book to Miami’s famous “Joe’s Stone Crab” restaurant, in a hardcover novel called “Waiting at Joe’s”…..

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I love how far the video industry has come.
I am fascinated how far the women in this business have come.
I remember how excited I was when I was given my first electric typewriter…..and marvel at our overall communications industry and were we are today.

We’ve been impressed with The Kitchen, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Kitchen, based in Miami, is the industry’s only Emmy Award Winning language translation, dubbing, subtitling and media services studio. For nearly 25 years, The Kitchen has held a unique position as an industry leader and holds the distinction of being the only global language studio to have won not just one, but two Prime Time Emmy Awards. The Kitchen does work to and from all languages, for all formats and genres of programming. With such clients as: NBCUni; Discovery; BBC; Paramount; Sesame Workshop; Sony; ITV; ZDF; Animaccord and on and on, the studio’s global reputation continues to grow and flourish. With sales offices in London and Madrid, and a global Board of Influencers in territories around the world, The Kitchen has been a proud part of the Florida entertainment industry for nearly a quarter of a century.
