Hidden Gems: Meet Danushka Boulos of Canush Miami

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danushka Boulos.

Hi Danushka, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I studied interior design at the Art Institute of Miami, and I’ve always been passionate about anything related to home décor. From early on, I knew I wanted to have my own furniture and accessories store.

Fifteen years ago, I opened my first store in Haiti, which I still have today. I manage it from Miami and travel to different countries to source furniture and accessories. Before opening my store, I worked with a design firm in Coral Gables and also worked at another furniture store for about a year. After that, I felt ready to fly on my own, and it’s been a nice story since.

When I moved to Miami five years ago, I saw a strong design community, but I also saw an opportunity to create a store that bridged the gap between luxury and everyday living. I wanted to open something in my area, MiMo, that felt accessible but still design-driven. Canush was created to offer curated pieces at approachable price points while keeping style and quality.

Opening the store here feels like a full-circle moment for me and the continuation of something I’ve been building for many years.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
In Haiti, the store became successful very quickly because it’s a smaller community and it’s easier to be known and have exposure. The biggest challenge there was the political situation in the country. Many times, we had to slow down or pause because of what was happening around us.

Eventually, I had to move and leave something I had built that was working very well. That was not easy, but I wanted to find a better place to live and give my son better opportunities and a better education. Now, here in Miami, the biggest challenge has been building brand awareness again from the beginning. I’m trying to rebuild what I created back home, and that takes time, patience, and a lot of work.

As you know, we’re big fans of Canush Miami. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Canush is an accessories store with furniture accent pieces. The goal is to have curated items at a more accessible price point, along with everyday living pieces that still feel special and well designed. You can find gifts for a host, something for your home, or pieces to build a beautiful bar or table setting.

We also provide interior design services and source different types of furniture, even if we don’t display everything in the store. It’s not a big showroom, but we work closely with clients to help them find what they need. I’m specialized in interior design and known for having a good eye. What sets me apart is that not all designers have access to suppliers and a physical space where people can see and experience design at an attainable price. The store itself is part of my design work.

I’m most proud of the effort and vision that have come together in this space. Since I graduated, this has been a work in progress and I’m still learning every day. It feels like a lifelong kind of work. Being able to put this together now feels full circle. Being here on Biscayne Boulevard is a huge accomplishment for me.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was a tomboy. I loved everything to do with cars and guns, and I didn’t like anything girly. No dolls, no dresses. I grew up with two brothers and a lot of boy cousins, so that really shaped me. I’ve always been very family-oriented and lived a slower life. I was raised with strong values like discipline and hard work. In my teenage years, I started to become more interested in interiors and design, and that’s when I began to see where my passion really was.
