Today we’d like to introduce you to Beth Howzen (Kais)
Hi Beth, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was always a competitive athlete and suffered injuries at an early age. When I was 22 I was a passenger in a severe car accident which left me with several injuries from my neck to my knees and everywhere in between. After my knee ligament reconstruction at age 23 I decided to do my own rehabilitation with spectacular results. Not only do I still not need a knee replacement I am training to run the Chicago Marathon on behalf of Project H.O.O.D. I just completed two 8 mile runs in two days – both in under 1 hour and 20 minutes and feel fantastic!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t think anyone gets a clear path on their journey. I love that mine includes endless learning about the body and the most effective ways to keep it functioning optimally. This requires extensive continuing education and research on topics that most people would never think affect health like straightness of the neck, tooth molar contact, peripheral vision, inhalation length and exhalation strength, digestion and what part of your foot strikes the ground first. Human performance requires all the systems to work at their best level. When one or more cannot because of injury or illness all the others must step up to 110% for the best results.
We’ve been impressed with Beth Howzen (Kais), but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I meet people where they are and guide them to the performance level they want to achieve. This approach works for everyone from professional grandparents to professional athletes and everyone in between regardless of injury or pain status. The exercises are developmental, meaning our body and nervous system is used to them from when we first learned how to roll, crawl and walk, and do not require any special equipment. The corrective work can be done anywhere at any time and integrates easily into the activities we perform every day including sports and weight training.
I am one of 74 people in the world that practice the performance training side of Postural Restoration as a Postural Restoration Trained practitioner. I am also a Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization trained practitioner. These two approaches together advance my clients much faster and safer than other methods.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Listening. The more you know about a client from the information they provide the more successful what you recommend will be – regardless of the product or industry. Ask follow up questions to guarantee you fully understand everything about the person you’re working with and what their needs and goals are. Be willing to leave your ego behind and do what is best for them.
