Hidden Gems: Meet Anna Chacon of MiamiDerm: Anna Chacon MD PA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Chacon

Hi Anna , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m Dr. Anna Chacon, MD PA, and I’m delighted to share my journey with you. My story begins in the vibrant city of Miami, where I was profoundly influenced by my father, a pioneering critical care physician. Growing up, I watched him navigate the challenges of patient care with remarkable compassion, especially during crises. His dedication inspired me to pursue a career in medicine, and I knew from an early age that becoming a doctor was my true calling.

I had the privilege of starting my educational journey at Convent of the Sacred Heart in Miami, where I graduated as valedictorian. I pursued my academic and medical training at Brown University, where I completed the Program in Liberal Medical Education, earning both my undergraduate degree in Economics and my medical degree. My focus on dermatology began with a research fellowship in dermatologic surgery at the University of Miami, where I contributed to clinical trials and presented research at national conferences. I then completed a surgical internship at Orlando Regional Medical Center before moving on to my dermatology residency at Los Angeles County + University of Southern California Medical Center, where I served as chief resident.

My interest in teledermatology grew during the COVID-19 pandemic when I recognized the potential for virtual care to increase access for patients in underserved areas. I am now licensed to practice in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and I manage a virtual dermatology practice that complements my in-person work in Florida, California, and Alaska. This allows me to provide care to a broad range of patients, including those in remote regions like the Arctic Slope of Alaska, where I am the first and only dermatologist to serve the local communities. It’s incredibly rewarding to offer this level of convenience and accessibility to my patients.
In my practice, I cover all aspects of dermatology, including medical, surgical, and cosmetic procedures. Beyond my clinical work, I’ve contributed to the field through peer-reviewed publications, textbook chapters, and national conference lectures. I’m actively involved in several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Dermatology, the European Academy of Dermatology & Venereology, the Women’s Dermatologic Society, and the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery.

On a personal note, I cherish my multi-ethnic heritage and speak five languages, including Spanish, French, Arabic, and Hebrew. This cultural diversity enhances my practice and helps me connect with patients from various backgrounds. Outside of work, I’m passionate about traveling, learning about different cultures, and I enjoy spending time with my two pugs, Sushi and Cruiser.

I’m excited to continue expanding access to dermatologic care through innovative platforms while maintaining a high standard of patient-centered care, whether in-person or virtually.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to where I am today has certainly had its challenges. While my journey has been deeply fulfilling, it hasn’t always been smooth. One of the significant obstacles I faced was the rigorous demands of medical education and training, particularly as I balanced my academic commitments with the pursuit of specialized research in dermatology. There were times when the workload felt overwhelming, especially during my residency, where long hours and the pressure pushed me to my limits.

Another challenge was navigating the transition from traditional in-person practice to teledermatology. While I saw the potential early on, there was a steep learning curve in adapting to the technology and understanding how to provide high-quality care remotely. Ensuring that patients across state lines and in remote areas received the same level of care as those seen in person required developing new protocols and constantly innovating my approach.

Additionally, working in diverse and often underserved regions like the Arctic Slope of Alaska presented its own set of challenges. The logistical difficulties of providing care in such remote areas, where access to healthcare is limited, required creative problem-solving and a deep commitment to overcoming the barriers of distance and infrastructure. Despite these obstacles, each challenge has strengthened my ability to innovate and provide the best possible care for my patients.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about MiamiDerm: Anna Chacon MD PA?
My practice is centered around providing accessible, high-quality dermatologic care to patients wherever they are. As a board-certified dermatologist, I specialize in all aspects of dermatology, including medical, surgical, and cosmetic care, but what truly sets my practice apart is our focus on teledermatology. We offer virtual dermatology services across all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, allowing patients to receive expert care from the comfort of their own homes.

What I’m most proud of is our commitment to making dermatologic care available to underserved and rural populations, particularly in areas where access to specialists is limited. For example, I am the first and only dermatologist to serve the remote Arctic Slope villages of Alaska and Native American populations in northern California, ensuring that even the most isolated communities receive the care they need.

Our practice is known for combining cutting-edge technology with personalized care. We believe that convenience should never compromise quality, and we strive to deliver the same high standard of care virtually as we do in person. Whether a patient needs a routine skin check, treatment for a chronic condition, or cosmetic services, we tailor our approach to meet their individual needs.

What I want readers to know is that our practice is dedicated to breaking down barriers in healthcare. We are here to provide expert dermatologic care to anyone, anywhere, ensuring that all patients have access to the treatments they need without the long wait times or logistical challenges often associated with seeing a specialist. We’re committed to delivering care that is not only convenient but also compassionate and comprehensive.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Absolutely, the COVID-19 crisis has been a profound learning experience in many ways.

The COVID-19 crisis taught me several important lessons:

Adaptability: The pandemic emphasized the need to be flexible and embrace new technologies. Shifting to teledermatology was a major transition, but it highlighted how crucial it is to adapt quickly to meet patient needs.

Enhanced Accessibility: I saw firsthand how telemedicine can transform access to care, particularly for patients in remote or underserved areas. It reinforced the potential to bridge gaps in healthcare delivery and reach those who might otherwise struggle to see a specialist.

Resilience: The crisis required creative problem-solving and resilience. From adjusting to remote consultations to managing increased demand for virtual services, it underscored the importance of being resourceful and prepared.

Patient-Centered Care: The pandemic reinforced the importance of focusing on patient needs. Ensuring that patients felt supported and received the care they needed, despite the physical barriers, was crucial.

Preparedness: Finally, it highlighted the value of having contingency plans and being prepared for unexpected events. The ability to quickly adapt and respond to emergencies is essential in healthcare.

Overall, the crisis was a challenging period, but it provided valuable insights into the importance of flexibility, innovation, and maintaining a strong focus on patient care.
