Hidden Gems: Meet Adrienne Lester of The AfroFoodie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adrienne Lester.

Adrienne Lester

Hi Adrienne, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hi! My name is Adrienne Lester but I’m also known as The AfroFoodie. My passion for cooking started when I was a teen obsessed with the Food Network. I tried to copy recipes and have my family try them. As I got older I knew I wanted to pursue a career in the culinary world, but traditional culinary school was really expensive and I didn’t want to be in debt at a young age.

I then found out about the US Coast Guard Culinary Specialist program and I applied. I was a little nervous about joining the military but I did it anyway. Once I made it through boot camp, I immediately went to culinary school. It was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. Throughout the year, I attended various trainings for pastry arts and plated desserts, I even had the opportunity to train with chefs at the Culinary Institute of America in San Antonio, TX.

Once I got out of the military in 2023, I began to think about my own business. Those thoughts became a reality and The AfroFoodie was born in Aug 2023. I offer catering, private chef, and meal prep services. I do what I love and I thank only God for that.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Some struggles were just learning how to manage my time wisely as a business owner. Also, marketing myself to get my name and services out there. I would describe it as a rocky road sundae lol. Some struggles were simple, some took time. For example, learning how to manage my time wisely as a business owner took time! It didn’t happen overnight.

Another example could be marketing myself to get my name and services out there. That was pretty easy, word of mouth is huge, and social media is unmatched. There were also very sweet moments, like finishing my website and doing a career day presentation at my children’s school. Boom, Rocky Road sundae with a cherry on top.

We’ve been impressed with The AfroFoodie, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I offer catering, private chef, and meal prep services. I also specialize in organic, cold-pressed raw juices. What sets me apart from other businesses is my faith in Jesus Christ. It’s an integral part of my life and the driving force behind my creativity.

I draw my strength, creativity, and inspiration from my unwavering belief. It’s this faith that not only sustains me but also infuses every dish with a touch of boldness, creating a unique and soulful dining experience that leaves a lasting impression. I’m most proud of the fact that I provide people with daily meals that they genuinely love and that brings me joy.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I like best the cultural diversity of South Florida and I like the traffic the least. I like best the cultural diversity of South Florida. I spent my childhood here and there are only 3 words that can describe it, cultural melting pot. It’s a beautiful thing to see so many different cultures celebrated and the food is my absolute fave!

From empanadas to pikliz, I love it all! I like the traffic the least. I’m not sure why traffic even exists. Then when you get to the point that makes everyone slow down, it’s something that’s not stop-worthy, like a sock in the road lol.
