Hidden Gems: Meet Abigail Metzler of Confident College Admissions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abigail Metzler.

Hi Abigail, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I was highly involved, achievement-oriented, and passionate about helping others. When I started college, I was convinced I would become a physician and was drawn to healthcare because I wanted to make a meaningful impact on people’s lives. However, as many students discover, our plans don’t always unfold exactly as we expect.

During college, I experienced firsthand what it feels like to question a path that once felt certain. Ultimately, I transitioned from pre-med to psychology, a decision that taught me invaluable lessons about identity, self-discovery, and redefining success. Looking back, that experience helped me understand something I now see in many of the students I work with: growth often happens when we’re willing to let go of who we thought we were supposed to be and become more curious about who we actually are.

As I continued my education and began training as a therapist, I became fascinated by how people navigate major life transitions. I saw how confidence, mindset, and the stories we tell ourselves influence our decisions and opportunities. While studying clinical psychology, friends and family members began asking for help with college and graduate school applications. After helping a friend apply to programs, they encouraged me to consider helping others because they found my perspective and guidance especially valuable.

That experience sparked something for me. I realized that what I enjoyed most wasn’t simply helping someone complete an application—it was helping them understand themselves more deeply and communicate their story authentically.

I began working with students one-on-one in 2023 and officially launched Confident College Admissions in 2025. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of guiding students through one of the most important transitions of their lives. Every time I work with a student from start to finish, I’m amazed by the amount of reflection, growth, and self-discovery that happens throughout the process. While admissions decisions matter, what excites me most is seeing students develop confidence in who they are and what they have to offer.

Today, I bring together my background as a clinical psychology PhD student, therapist-in-training, and admissions consultant to help students navigate the admissions process with greater confidence, clarity, and well-being.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road, but I think that’s true for most meaningful endeavors.

One of the biggest challenges has been building a business while simultaneously pursuing a clinical psychology PhD, conducting research, providing therapy, and supervising students. There have been many moments when balancing those responsibilities felt overwhelming, and I’ve had to learn how to be intentional with my time and energy.

Another challenge has been learning an entirely new skill set. My education prepared me to support clients and think critically, but it didn’t teach me how to run a business. Like many entrepreneurs, I’ve had to learn marketing, content creation, sales, and business development along the way.

Perhaps the biggest challenge, though, has been managing self-doubt. Building something from the ground up requires believing in a vision long before you see results. I’ve had moments where I wondered whether anyone would care about what I was creating or whether I was truly cut out for entrepreneurship. It’s easy to compare yourself to people who have been doing this work for years and feel like you’re behind.

What has helped me most is remembering why I started. Every time I work with a student and watch them gain confidence, discover new things about themselves, or feel less overwhelmed by the admissions process, I’m reminded that this work matters. Those experiences have reinforced my belief that there is a need for admissions support that prioritizes both achievement and well-being.

Looking back, I’ve learned that progress often happens more slowly than we expect, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Building something meaningful takes time, and I’ve come to appreciate the value of trusting the process and staying committed to the long-term vision.

As you know, we’re big fans of Confident College Admissions. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Confident College Admissions was built on the belief that college admissions should be about more than simply getting into a particular school. While admissions outcomes matter, I believe the process can also be an opportunity for growth, self-discovery, and increased confidence.

As a fourth-year clinical psychology PhD student and therapist-in-training, I’ve seen firsthand how stress, perfectionism, self-doubt, and comparison can impact students. Many admissions services focus primarily on strategy and outcomes. While strategy is certainly important, I wanted to create a business that also prioritizes the person behind the application.

Through personalized support and practical resources, I help students and families navigate the admissions process with greater clarity, confidence, and peace of mind. My goal is not only to help students build strong applications, but also to help them better understand themselves, communicate their stories authentically, and make decisions that align with their values and goals.

I’ve had the privilege of working with students who have been accepted into competitive PhD programs, prestigious fellowships, and selective summer honors programs. While those successes are exciting, the outcomes I’m most proud of are often less visible. Students frequently tell me they feel less stressed, more confident, and more supported throughout the process. Many leave with a clearer understanding of who they are and what they want from the next chapter of their lives.

What I’m most proud of is building a brand that values student well-being alongside achievement. I want students and families who visit my website to feel seen and understood. College admissions isn’t just about deadlines, essays, and acceptance letters—it’s also about identity, growth, and preparing for the future. My mission is to support students through all of it.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Many of us feel pressure to have everything figured out, whether we’re choosing a college major, starting a business, or making a career change. In reality, some of the most important opportunities and insights come from trying something, paying attention to how it feels, and adjusting course as you learn more about yourself.

My own journey certainly didn’t follow a straight line. I started college convinced I would become a physician, eventually transitioned into psychology, and later found my way into admissions consulting and entrepreneurship. None of those paths were part of a master plan. They emerged because I stayed open to new experiences and paid attention to what energized me.

I also encourage people to build a life based on their own values rather than solely on external expectations. It’s easy to make decisions based on what looks impressive or what other people think you should do. However, long-term fulfillment often comes from choosing paths that genuinely align with who you are and what matters most to you.

Whether you’re a student applying to college, an entrepreneur building a business, or someone navigating a transition, you don’t need to have everything figured out before taking the next step. Start where you are, stay curious, and trust that clarity often comes through action rather than certainty.
