We’re looking forward to introducing you to Hailey Ezzell. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Hailey, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
I have to say opening the first vinyl copy of my debut album! It was such a surreal experience. I definitely felt proud of myself in that moment. As a vinyl collector, this was a particularly special moment in my career so far.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Hailey Ezzell. I am a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist based in South Florida. I write what I call “New 80s Rock”, inspired by my favorite artists from the 70s and 80s. Right now, I am releasing my debut album, “Queen of the Airwaves”, which will be out November 21st! This album has been in production for a few years, so I’m really excited for everyone to finally hear it!
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
I think my parents definitely saw me, but I feel like they are supposed to do that (haha). I would say my grandma, Granny Peg, was one of the first people to really see and get me, even before I did.
I have always been one of those people who is just *themself*. And I feel like my eccentricities and oddities were a little odd to some of my extended family and friends. As a kid, I was super into “Phantom of the Opera” and “Little House on the Prairie”, when other kids were into Justin Beiber and “Hannah Montana”. My grandma would listen as I yapped endlessly about everything and anything. She would always give useful comments and praise to my writings, drawings, photography, crafts, and more. She was extremely supportive of all my artist endeavors, from a very early age. I wish she could see what I’m doing now.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I almost gave up on this album a million times. It seemed too ambitious, too silly, too hard, too frivolous, too everything. But, at the base of everything was a desire to really make this work. Whenever a roadblock would arise, I would go around, over, or through and run until the next one came up. To say I desperately wanted to succeed at completing this album is an understatement. I think that, with all challenges, you just need the drive and true desire to complete the task at hand. If I didn’t have that, I would not have the album that I have today. And, now that I’ve done it once, I know that I can do it and that I can do it again!
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
I’m a pretty transparent person. I’m a horrible actress and I think that becomes apparent when you meet me (haha). The public version might swear a little less… but otherwise, I’m me! I think authenticity is important to an artist and the easiest way to portray authenticity is to just be yourself- no acting needed.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people are still talking about my music. I hope people are still listening and rockin’ out. I hope it’s like my dearly departed idols and that people will wax poetically about their favorite songs and shows. That people will have my songs as the soundtrack of their memories and hold them closely as a part of themselves.
