Good morning Gelena, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day for me would be answering labor calls, running to clinic for appointments, addressing my 2 autistic kids needs and making sure my other 3 kids are ok! Life is never slow dull or quiet.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am Midwife Gelena. I began my journey 17 years ago into Midwifery. I started off with my own homebirth practice, Peaceful Pregnancy Pathways (which I still have), eventually opened a birth center, Natural BirthWorks, and recently obtained another birth center, Hollywood Birth Center. I also created Midwife 101 which is a comprehensive childbirth class series. I specialize in low-risk natural out of hospital births with an emphasis on holistic care. I have 5 children of my own with 4 very different birth stories!
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My best support is my family. Without my husband or my mother and family I wouldn’t have the successes I have today. It truly takes a village.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Every day I strive to stay positive and focused. This life isn’t for the weak and I’ve been thrown extra curve balls. Strength is not easy but empowering.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That women can’t birth without intervention. That birth is a medical emergency and you should be in a hospital. The best outcomes comes from Midwives, like myself, who are trained in low-risk out of hospital births. We have been birthing babies successfully since the beginning of time. Find a provider who knows the history of birth and merges the knowledge we have learned to provide the best environment for you.
