Funky Matas of Wynwood on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Funky Matas shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Funky , thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Very improvised since I could remember. I might want a coffee somewhere or I might book a flight to England.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m just a human. I think. I almost killed myself a really long time ago, and I eventually got to the conclusion that the only thing that matters in life is love. So anything to do or try to have the underline meaning of it be love. With that being said, I also don’t take life too seriously. I don’t get offended easily and I don’t really give a f*ck about other people‘s opinions. All I do is try and focus on creating a happy radius around me and creating as many smile as I possibly can!

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I think I’ve had a lot of these throughout my life when I realize that other people‘s opinions don’t make a difference in my life. But I think the most powerful one for me was LEARNING first hand that other people’s opinions don’t really matter. Once you figure that out, it gives you room to be yourself unapologetically.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
I’m really afraid of glitter. I wish this was a lie and it sounds so childish. But it’s the f*cking truth! 🤣 So I guess any situation involving glitter that could have benefitted me, I have instantly walked away from. It’s just the herpes of the fairy world!

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
To be honest it’s not just my industry. It’s the entire world. Nothing really is as it seems. A lot of food isn’t healthy anymore. A lot of propaganda is just bullshit. Everything is distorted. And you really have to go out of your way and do some serious research in order to just feel healthy.I live in society, but at the same time, secluded from society in a mental state. I tried living in an abandoned beach a while ago, and I got to the conclusion that I as a person that’s mentally and spiritually awake, need to be in society in order to help plant some seeds in people‘s brains in order for them to wake up as well. There’s no point in being awake, spiritually and mentally by yourself, if you’re not helping and sharing this beautiful feeling with others.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I think what I would like. The most is if anyone remembers me, they remember how free of a spirit I was and more than that I would love for people to see me and feel the urge to be their best self and their most real self unapologetically. And do everything that they’re so asked them for!
