Today we’d like to introduce you to Willie Noveck.
Hi Willie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I taught for a major test prep company for a couple of years and at first it was wonderful — but one day I had a student and we got into a disagreement about whether retrocausality was real (what can I say, I was a philosophy major).
I thought it was a friendly debate. But he never forgave me for disagreeing with him. He gave the company scathing feedback about me, which led to an investigation. The company ended up taking my side and apologizing to me for the whole thing but I did not like the idea that one person could threaten my job. I decided that day that if I struck out on my own, I would never have to worry about being fired.
It was a great decision. That student hated me, but he ultimately helped me strike out on my own and achieve success.
We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been pretty smooth for me, but there are some key reasons for that:
1. I screen out people who are going to be difficult to work with early on. I take 90% of the people who reach out to me but refusing the other 10% is critical to maintaining my energy and well-being.
2. You always want to have multiple sources of income, multiple options, backup plans, etc. I find that desperation breeds disaster. When I started, I worked a service industry job so that I had income and slowly scaled that back as my business grew.
If you can grow your business without worrying about supporting yourself, that is key.
