Exploring Life & Business with Shalonna Battle of Perfect Harmony Telemedicine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shalonna Battle.

Shalonna Battle

Hi Shalonna, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My career as a health care professional started as a labor and delivery nurse. I was a young, vibrant, and new nurse who loved being part of the birthing experience. It was a privilege and honor to be with a woman and her family as they brought new life into the world. I enjoyed every moment of it.

However, there were a few things about health care in this country that I did not enjoy. I realized that even though we live in a wealthy and industrialized country, access to affordable and quality health care is not a privilege for everyone. I felt that women, especially African American women were not properly informed about their healthcare options, and at times, the hospital system was operated too much like a “business” and not a place of care and restoration for individuals in the community.

To make a difference in the world, I went back to school to become a women’s health nurse practitioner. I felt that in this capacity, I would be able to be more resourceful for women and properly educate and inform women on how they can obtain optimal health through preventative measures (i.e. yearly screenings, and lifestyle changes).

After becoming a nurse practitioner, I furthered my education on a doctoral level to understand how healthcare policies affect the health of communities and how to apply evidence-based research to the way that I practice and care for women.

Through God’s grace and with these opportunities, I have been able to care for many women in my community! I have a true passion for helping women achieve health, happiness, and prosperity. I believe that all women deserve the right to be well informed, have their concerns addressed, and have a provider they can confide in and one that will address their health needs holistically.

I’ve realized that women face many barriers to achieving such care and lack the ability to attain all that they deserve from our healthcare system. I’ve been on a mission to fill in the gap. I started a podcast called The Eavesdrop Podcast, which is a women’s health podcast that was created to educate, inform, and empower women to take charge of their physical, spiritual, and mental health.

Each podcast episode is meticulously coordinated in an effort to address concerns about the physical, social, mental, and spiritual aspects of women’s health and wellness. Last year in June, I established Perfect Harmony Women’s Health Telemedicine to help increase access to health services. It’s my goal to make a difference in the lives of women and their families with these resources.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’d say that it has been a labor of love. I have been managing these two projects on my own. I like to say that my main hat is health care and nursing education. A hat that I am trying to fit into is being a businesswoman! Being new to entrepreneurship has provided many learning experiences that have helped me to grow professionally.

I am also balancing working as a nurse practitioner and nursing education full-time. So, at times it does become a balancing act. But, I am always excited when it is time to work on the podcast and the telemedicine practice.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
One book (amongst many others) that I often lean on to help guide the way I practice is Women’s Wisdom, Women’s Bodies by Dr. Christiane Northrup. I also follow other books by Dr. Northrup. I love to read literature and stay updated with the latest in women’s health research. I am a member of the National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women’s Health and with this membership, I have access to various types of literature. This information has also helped me with my career.

For my personal growth and development, I love listening to Iyanla Vanzant. She has a podcast called the “R Spot” that I find uplifting and informative. Another podcast that has helped my personal growth is ” In the Light” with Dr. Anita Phillips. Two books that have also been beneficial to me are “Do It Afraid by Joyce Meyer” and “Lead From The Outside” by Stacey Abrams.
