Exploring Life & Business with Rudy Mage of CHIMU

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rudy Mage.

Hi Rudy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Rudy Mage’s journey began far from the colorful walls and creative spaces that would later define his career. Born in Peru and raised in Miami, he discovered a passion for art at a young age, using drawing and design as a way to express himself and connect with the world around him. Growing up in South Florida’s diverse cultural landscape, he was inspired by the city’s energy, street art, music, and entrepreneurial spirit.

At just 18 years old, Rudy began hustling to turn his creativity into a business, printing and selling T-shirts from the trunk of his car while attending school. He earned a degree in computer animation and design, then launched his own company, building what would become a respected Miami-based creative brand specializing in apparel production, graphic design, and branding.

His path was not without setbacks. During a difficult period marked by personal challenges and business struggles, Rudy faced the possibility of losing everything. Instead of giving up, he downsized, rebuilt, and doubled down on his vision. That resilience helped him not only recover but grow stronger, eventually expanding his businesses and opening a gallery space dedicated to supporting local artists and showcasing unique artwork and fashion.
Today, Rudy Mage is recognized as a creative director, entrepreneur, and mural artist whose work reflects both his immigrant roots and Miami upbringing. His story is one of persistence, reinvention, and the belief that creativity can become a thriving business when matched with relentless determination.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Some of Rudy Mage’s greatest challenges came during the early stages of building his career. As a young entrepreneur, he started with limited resources, selling T-shirts from the trunk of his car while trying to establish his brand. Like many small business owners, he faced financial uncertainty, long hours, and the constant pressure of turning creative talent into a sustainable source of income.

As his business grew, Rudy encountered periods of significant personal and professional hardship. Economic setbacks, cash-flow challenges, and the demands of managing multiple creative ventures tested his resilience. At one point, he faced the possibility of losing much of what he had built, forcing him to make difficult decisions, scale back operations, and rebuild from the ground up.

Another obstacle was breaking into Miami’s highly competitive creative industry. Establishing himself as both an artist and entrepreneur required years of persistence, networking, and proving his value in a crowded market. He had to overcome rejection, missed opportunities, and the skepticism that often accompanies unconventional career paths.
Rather than allowing these setbacks to define him, Rudy used them as motivation. The challenges strengthened his determination, refined his business approach, and ultimately helped shape the artist and entrepreneur he is today. His story demonstrates how resilience, adaptability, and a willingness to start over can transform obstacles into opportunities for growth.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about CHIMU?
CHIMU is a Peruvian-born apparel brand founded by Rudy Mage and Aaron Salgado, created to merge comfort, culture, and streetwear into a product people can wear every day. Known for its signature shorts, CHIMU draws inspiration from Miami’s vibrant energy, athletic lifestyle, and diverse cultural influences.

The brand was built on the idea that shorts should be more than just casual clothing—they should represent confidence, movement, and individuality. Designed for both style and functionality, CHIMU shorts are made for people who transition seamlessly from the gym to the streets, from the beach to everyday life.

Like many independent fashion brands, CHIMU faces challenges in its early years. Competing against established athletic and streetwear companies required creativity, persistence, and a strong connection to its community. Building brand awareness, managing production costs, and maintaining quality while growing the business were constant obstacles.

Despite these challenges, CHIMU developed a loyal following by staying true to its identity and focusing on authentic design. Today, the brand represents Miami culture, entrepreneurship, and the belief that great products are built through passion, resilience, and attention to detail. More than just a pair of shorts, CHIMU embodies a lifestyle centered on movement, ambition, and self-expression.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Finding a mentor starts with putting yourself in rooms where the people you admire already are. Early on, I learned that networking isn’t about collecting business cards—it’s about building genuine relationships. Some of the best mentors I’ve had weren’t formal mentors at all. They were people I met through events, collaborations, and shared projects who were willing to share advice because they saw that I was serious about my work.

What worked best for me was showing up consistently. I attended local events, supported other entrepreneurs, introduced myself to people, and followed up after meeting them. Instead of asking, “Can you mentor me?” I focused on asking specific questions and learning from their experiences. Over time, those conversations naturally developed into mentorship relationships.

Another thing that helped was creating opportunities rather than waiting for them. Through my art, apparel brand, and business ventures, I collaborated with people whose work I respected. Working alongside talented individuals taught me more than any networking event could.

My advice is to lead with value. Be curious, be authentic, and look for ways to contribute before asking for something in return. People are much more likely to invest their time in someone who is passionate, consistent, and willing to put in the work. The relationships you build over time will often become more valuable than any single opportunity.
