Today we’d like to introduce you to Paola Prieto
Hi Paola, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m originally from Bogotá, Colombia, and moved to the U.S. when I was 14. My journey with photography started at a young age—around 10 years old—when my mom gave me my first Kodak 35mm camera. From that moment, I felt an instant connection with the camera, and I couldn’t get enough of it. I’d take it with me to every family gathering, capturing as many moments as I could.
As I got older, I decided to pursue a career in the television industry, but my passion for photography and videography never faded. I continued to hone my skills alongside my career, learning more about the craft as I went. When I moved to Miami, I took a big step by enrolling in a photography academy. That experience not only expanded my technical knowledge but also allowed me to connect with other professionals, which was key to my growth in the field.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, especially considering that Miami is one of the most competitive cities for creative professionals. There’s no shortage of talented photographers and videographers here, so standing out has been a challenge. However, one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned throughout this journey is the importance of carving out my own brand and niche. The creative field is constantly evolving, and keeping up with new technology is key to staying relevant.
Equally important has been building and maintaining a strong network of colleagues. In an industry where everyone brings a unique perspective, it’s essential to learn from one another. Rather than viewing each other as competitors, I’ve found that collaboration and mutual learning are what drive growth. Staying connected with others in the field helps push me to continually improve and evolve my craft.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At the moment, I’m in a phase of experimentation, which allows me to push creative boundaries and explore new techniques. I specialize in a wide range of photography, including professional headshots, weddings, studio portraits, product photography, and event photography. Each of these areas allows me to tell unique stories, whether it’s capturing a personal milestone or showcasing a product in its best light.
What I’m most proud of is my ability to adapt to different styles and settings, while maintaining a high standard of quality. I’ve worked hard to develop a versatile portfolio that reflects my skills in both staged environments and candid moments. I believe what sets me apart is my attention to detail and my commitment to making each session personalized. Whether it’s understanding the subtle dynamics of a wedding day or capturing the right expression for a headshot, I focus on creating an experience that is tailored to my clients’ needs.
I’m also known for my approachability and ability to make clients feel at ease, which I believe is key to getting the best results. Photography is about more than just technical skill—it’s about connecting with people and making them feel comfortable in front of the camera. That’s where I think I really stand out.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
One surprising aspect that only those who know me well truly appreciate is my deep attention to detail. I have a natural ability to spot beauty in the overlooked—whether it’s the way light falls on a seemingly ordinary scene, the texture of a weathered wall, or the delicate reflection in a puddle. It’s in these small imperfections and fleeting moments that I see the potential for something extraordinary. For example, this year I was honored to receive second place in the Bayfront Park photography contest, “Dejando Huellas,” a recognition that celebrates my unique perspective.
What truly sets me apart is not just my ability to notice these subtle details, but also my constant drive to learn, adapt, and evolve. I’m always seeking out those hidden, often fleeting elements that can transform an image and tell a deeper story, revealing something new even in the most familiar of settings.
