Exploring Life & Business with Nicole Noonan of New Chapter Capital

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Noonan.

Nicole Noonan

Hi Nicole, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I always knew I wanted to be a lawyer. My grandmother loved Perry Mason and often said that is what I “should be when I grew up. ” I knew she was right!

During school, I worked with New Jersey Ballet and took on modeling jobs, but law was where I was heading. After graduating from Boston College, I returned to the NYC area to attend Seton Hall University School of Law.

Upon graduation, I practiced with several top-rated divorce law firms throughout my career. I worked on the litigation of a large number of complex family law cases involving both financial and custody disputes, including some of the leading reported cases in these areas. It was from there I was inspired to bring Divorce Funding to the US. Women (and men) would come into my office not able to afford the litigation costs but would be entitled to money at settlement.

Many of these clients would be backed into taking a settlement far less than what they were entitled to through a divorce. Today, I run New Chapter Capital, Inc. the largest and most established divorce funding company in the United States.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It is always challenging to bring a new product and idea. When I first started introducing divorce funding to my fellow lawyers many did not understand how it worked and how it could help their clients.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about New Chapter Capital, Inc.?
Divorce means the end of life as one knows it, both physically and emotionally. Even under the best of circumstances divorce is difficult. Not to mention expensive.

The cost is not just financial but also emotional and without the right of experts, a complex divorce could be devastating, especially for the non-monied spouse. Even asset-rich spouses could be unable to hire the right divorce professionals if they lack liquidity.

New Chapter Capital is a fund that provides financial support for individuals going through a divorce that does not have the liquidity for legal fees, professional fees, or living expenses. Unlike banks or other finance companies, NCC will assess your eligibility based on the expected settlement from your divorce proceeds.

In a perfect world, both spouses have set aside money for a divorce though in reality people save for a wedding, not divorce. While it would be wonderful if both spouses got along and could just agree on how assets should be divided unfortunately that is not always the case.

Alternatives to saving up, the monied spouse could be ordered to pay both sides’ legal fees and expert costs, but even getting there through the motion process can be expensive and time-consuming. Funding from my company lessens the stress of the situation.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I loved ballet and performing. This is helpful in my practice as some of those skills translate to delivering compelling arguments in court.
