Exploring Life & Business with Lexi of The Smart Singer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lexi.

Hi Lexi, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my journey at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami as a music education major and fell in love with the program and teaching others how to sing. However, I knew I didn’t want to teach in a traditional school setting and felt like I could serve a bigger audience. I started posting educational singing videos on Tik Tok and Instagram during the pandemic as a way to connect with others and start a business of my own. The videos did much better than I ever thought they would and I ended up with a full online private teaching studio before graduating college. From there, I wanted to serve a greater population of singers, especially ones who could not afford private lessons but who really wanted to learn. I started a program called “The Voice Gym” which is a community for beginner singers to connect and learn how to sing directly from a professional through live group masterclasses, video feedback, and a 24/7 forum to communicate with me and other members.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was really difficult transitioning to being a full time business owner, especially after getting comfortable in working for other companies. Moving to NYC was the first time that I realized I needed to make a livable income solely off of what I love. There were moments where if I lost a client or made any mistakes along the way, it would cause a lot of stress and worry. After going through many different experiences, I have learned to embrace the changes and difficulties that come along with being an educator and business owner.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The Smart Singer is an online learning community designed to help aspiring singers find their confidence and their own

authentic sound. I specialize in teaching singing through songs that students actually want to learn such as pop, rock, and musical theatre. This includes high belts, riffs, and a solid foundation of vocal technique. I teach students of all levels through my one-on-one Zoom lessons as well as leading an online beginner membership called “The Voice Gym.”

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I definitely could not have done it without my family and friends who supported me at every stage of my business and career. My high school choir director, Adam Paltrowitz has also become a mentor/colleague who is also embarking on an entrepreneurship journey as well. I try to surround myself with other likeminded entrepreneurs and voice teachers so that I know I’m not alone in this journey.

Pricing:

  • Currently my Voice Gym membership is at $29/month, but I have been occasionally increasing to add value to my subscribers and to reward those who join early.
  • A first Zoom lesson with me is $40 for 30 mins where I assess your vocal abilities and share how I can help.
  • Further Zoom one-on-one lessons are $60, $75, and $90 for 30min, 45min, and 60min, respectively
