Exploring Life & Business with Ken Lorber of The Kitchen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ken Lorber.

Hi Ken, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I left college, as a Mass Comm major, just six credits short of receiving a diploma. With a steadfast passion for the Television Production industry, I jumped at the chance to work in the real world of TV, left college, took the job, and never looked back. I became the youngest video facility owner in NYC; became the “father” of video animatics, a rudimentary form of test commercials that is still in use today; developed million dollar mixing and editing suites and built the industry’s first Beta editing suite. Having mentored many in those days in the infancy of the video world, I then relocated to Miami and was responsible for building the Hispanic broadcast industry here. I encouraged MTV Latino to move to Miami and built their amazing and much applauded video studio on Miami Beach; brought Discovery Latin to Miami, Sony and more. Nearly 25 years ago I founded The Kitchen, the business’ only Emmy Award Winning language dubbing studio, here in Miami, along with Carlos Cisneros, from the Venezuelan Cisneros Television Group. I quickly had the opportunity to purchase The Kitchen outright and today it is one of the preeminent language localization studios in the world. And for the record, last week, I know that I havemade my parent proud and finally received my college diploma for my life’s work. Certainly something that would make my parents proud.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s about taking chances. Thinking outside of the box. Finding the right people. Having confidence.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
The Kitchen, headquartered in Miami, is the entertainment industry’s only Emmy Award Winning language services studio. Providing language services, to and from every language, for all formats and genres of programming, the studio is about to celebrate its 25the year in business. We do have studios, offices and partners globally and work for such entities as: NBCUni; Sesame Workshop; BBC; ITV; France Television; Paramount; Sony; ZDF; Mediatoon; Animaccord; Cruncyroll and on and on.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Good Luck! Good Luck has given me over 50 years of an incredible, productive and rewarding work life in an industry that I continue to have as much passion for today, as I did as that 18 year old so many years ago. Good Luck has brought me so much opportunity. Good Luck has given me the “chutzpah” to not be afraid to just “go for it” in business and in life. Good Luck has brought me an incredible partner, who happens to be my wife., Deeny Kaplan. Not only have we grown professionally, as partners in The Kitchen over the past 25 years, we faced larger companies who have no where near the accomplishments we achieved together. Good Luck has brou9ht me incredible, healthy, smart and loving children and grandchildren. I’d say that I am most fortunate to have Good Luck as a backbone to my life.
