Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara Burnstine.
Hi Kara, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My path to nutrition began in the early 90s, navigating a thin-obsessed culture as a teenager struggling to find balance. Like many, I fell into the trap of skipping meals and fearing ‘fat,’ which left me depleted and anxious.
Everything changed when my mother guided me toward a nutritionist who helped me separate ‘fact from frenzy.’ That pivotal year taught me how to fuel my body with confidence and finally ditch the guilt of the occasional treat. Inspired by my own transformation, I pursued a degree in Dietetics. After a nearly two decade-long career spanning clinical and community care, diabetes management, and medical technology, I’ve returned to my true passion: helping individuals and corporate teams find their own sustainable balance through private counseling and wellness programs.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My professional path wasn’t a straight line, but every detour added a new layer to my expertise. After college, when an internship match didn’t materialize, I spent a few years in marketing—an unexpected turn that sharpened my communication skills before I returned to my true passion: graduate school for nutrition.
In 2018, life threw another curveball when my role at a medical device company dissolved. Rather than seeing it as an end, I saw it as an opening. I launched my private practice to finally provide nutrition counseling on my own terms. Since then, I’ve been helping clients navigate their own journeys with the same resilience and ‘fact-over-frenzy’ approach that guided mine.
As you know, we’re big fans of Nutrition Your Weigh, Inc.. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
At Nutrition Your Weigh, Inc., the mission is right in the name. My goal is to help individuals, groups, and corporations define what ‘healthy’ looks like for them. I believe in meeting you exactly where you are today—not where a textbook says you should be.
By focusing on confidence and sustainable habit shifts, we move toward lifestyle adjustments that actually stick. Specializing in diabetes, weight loss, gut health, and metabolic balance, I move away from ‘cookie-cutter’ plans. My approach is rooted in listening to your body’s cues and making mindful decisions rather than impulsive ones. After all, we’re humans, not robots, and no two days are created equal. This journey is a marathon, not a sprint—so pack some snacks and a magazine, and let’s get started.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I’ll be the first to admit: I am innately risk-averse. For years, I was perfectly happy with the stability of a 401k and a steady paycheck. But when my company dissolved and the choice was taken out of my hands, I had to make a move. I decided to take the ultimate risk and bet on myself.
Launching Nutrition Your Weigh, Inc. wasn’t a smooth ride—especially with a global pandemic hitting shortly after—but through networking, partnerships, and a bit of luck, I’m still here. Today, I’m proud to help my clients find ‘their healthy,’ one day at a time, proving that sometimes the risks we’re most afraid of are the ones most worth taking.
