Exploring Life & Business with JR Lopez of Kazador Industries, LL. dba Kazador

Today we’d like to introduce you to JR Lopez.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
After years working as a border officer, I realized our niche industry lacked mission-specific tools for our unique duties—especially an anti-narcotics probe used to check hidden compartments for drugs. For decades, officers relied on a dangerous homemade tool with no safety features, no sheath, and no standards.

After a particular cocaine arrest where my probe fell out of my duty belt—and I had that split-second fear of “is he going for it?”—I decided enough was enough. I approached manufacturers, but every company wanted a million dollars just to start.

So, in true American tradition, I saw a need and an opportunity. I began building my own prototypes, pushed through criticism, doubt, and money problems, and eventually created a mission-specific knife designed to help border officers become their best!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I always tell people I jumped into business with my eyes blindfolded and my hands tied behind my back. So no—this has been far from a smooth ride. I’m learning as I go, and you truly learn the most from your mistakes. I’ve made plenty—everything from not understanding finance, logistics, and policies to facing my biggest challenge: marketing.

Business isn’t easy, but for those with grit and perseverance (lol… I’m not there yet, but I’m working on it), everything I’ve seen and read tells me it’s worth it.

As you know, we’re big fans of Kazador Industries, LL. dba Kazador . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My business is rooted in my life’s passion—helping people become better. For my company, that means helping border officers become their best professional version by providing mission-specific tactical gear.

My experience as a Marine in combat taught me that the right gear and training can mean the difference between life and death. That’s why my efforts focus on giving border officers practical insight into interviewing techniques, contraband detection, and observational skills—paired with industry-specific tools designed to make them better!

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
These days, it’s not hard to find a mentor. Your local SBDC office can point you in the right direction. But like anything in life, there are mentors—and then there are MENTORS. I’ve met both.

My advice? Keep your eyes open. Opportunities can show up anywhere. For example, last year I picked up a newspaper, read an article about a former CIA officer who owned a security company, reached out, and through that connection I found an incredible mentor.
