Exploring Life & Business with Jenn Martinez of Pulse Fitness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenn Martinez

Hi Jenn, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My story begins in Santiago de Cuba. When I was 8 years old, my family and I moved to Florida. My parents never let me forget that I was lucky to be in the U.S. As a teenager, I would clean houses with my mom on the weekends, and she would often remind me that I needed to study and work hard so that I didn’t have to clean houses in the future. I graduated high school #9 in my class and attended the University of Florida. At the age of 21, I graduated UF Magna cum laude with a Bachelor in Public Relations and a Masters in Business Management. After college I started working for Aldi, the grocery store, as a District Manager. I was promoted at Aldi and moved to Chicago, which is where I started my high-intensity reformer Pilates journey.

I immediately fell in love with Pilates. I signed up for an unlimited membership after my first class. I fell in love with how challenging the workout is, the variety of moves, the low-impact on my joints (I have bad knees), and how fast time goes by when I am in class. I have always loved working out, but struggled with long-term consistency because whenever work or school got very hectic, working out was one of the things I would give up. Once I found Pilates, I found the motivation to workout in the mornings, and since the classes are only 50 minutes it was really easy to consistently fit it into my schedule.

I never imagined that I would open a Pilates studio, however, after having a few different jobs at large corporations and not feeling fulfilled, I badly wanted to do something I was more passionate about. One day at lunch while at my corporate job at Chewy, one of our analyst randomly mentioned that she really wanted to try out high-intensity Pilates but that there were no studios in her area. I was shocked because I had always had access to a studio in any city I had lived. It was this simple interaction that planted the seed in my head to look into opening my own studio. Unlike traditional Pilates, high-intensity reformer Pilates is still fairly new, so there’s so much opportunity to share this amazing workout with more people.

Since opening my studio, I am the most fulfilled I have ever been in my career. It feels so rewarding to hear clients say that Pulse is their happy place or that they are pleased with the results they have seen on their bodies. It is also extremely rewarding to train the coaches that work at the studio and to be able to empower them in their Pilates journey.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Opening a business is always challenging. I think the biggest challenge for me was the mental barrier of leaving my very comfortable corporate job and doing something I had no guarantee would succeed. I am naturally a risk adverse person, and betting on myself was the biggest risk I have ever taken. The amount of time you put into opening a business is also exhausting. In the beginning I wore all the hats including painting, cleaning, training, recruiting, social media, etc. It was exhausting, but when you’re working for yourself it doesn’t feel as tedious. You find the energy to do what you have to do, even on your worst days.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
To me success is defined by level of hapiness. I think that being happy is the most important thing in life. A lot of different aspects of life can contribute to that happiness, like money, making an impact, feeling connected with others, good health, etc.
