Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Quintana Marti.
Hi Brittany, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am a first-generation college graduate born and raised in Miami. I was always a good student and a hard worker who decided early on that I wanted to be a lawyer. However, I was never exactly sure what that would entail. Raised primarily by my single father, I was always close to my family and my community. However, the time eventually came for me to leave Miami and continue my education elsewhere.
After graduating from the University of Florida, I committed to attending law school in Washington, D.C… I left for D.C. 20 days after my mother’s passing and learned, soon thereafter, how difficult law school would prove to be for me. I desperately missed home, but I completed my studies primarily because I like to finish what I start. And while I loved the challenge of learning and applying the law to different situations, I still knew that there was something missing. In my second to last semester of law school, I met my husband, Jose Marti (yes, that is actually his name), in a Negotiations course. Eventually, we agreed to date long-distance until he could take the Florida bar and relocate to Miami. Fast forward over a decade later, we both reside in Miami with our two children, AJ, our four years old, and Emila, our nine months old. My husband was, without a doubt, the “reason” I needed to be in D.C for those three years.
After graduating from law school, I began my career as a lawyer for the Department of Children and Families. There, I represented the state of Florida in child abuse, abandonment and neglect cases. I learned there that I enjoyed litigation. Still, something was missing professionally for me. On my quest to satisfy my desire to figure out my professional goals, I worked at several different law firms in different areas of law for the next seven years. At those various jobs, I fine-tuned my skills as a lawyer while growing my family. Still, something was missing.
Eventually, after two miscarriages and a difficult pregnancy with my son, I realized that, in fact, several things were missing for me. I was missing my autonomy. I was missing opportunities to enjoy moments with my growing family. Most of all, I was craving reconnecting with my community. I knew what I had to do. I opened my own law firm, and I have never looked back since then.
In the last four years, Quintana Law has taken me on a wild and exhilarating ride. Our firm, which specializes in representing residential and commercial policyholders in disputes with their insurance companies, has grown from one to four employees. Additionally, our team has provided assistance to over 150 insureds throughout the state of Florida (primarily in South Florida) and secured over a million dollars in payments for property damages suffered my our policyholder clients. We survived and, in fact, thrived during the pandemic; and I have had the distinct honor and privilege of watching my baby sister finish her own studies as a lawyer and become my law partner.
We are a family business. We are a community business. We are a proud business owned and operated by women, both under the age of 40. And we are proud of everything we have done so far. However, my story is unfinished. The lesson that I have learned thus far is that, as a child, I thought I wanted to be a lawyer. Today, I know that what I really wanted to be was a businesswoman and a change-maker. I want our business to leave an impact on this community that I love so much, and we strive to accomplish that every day.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Some things on this journey have come easier than others. The same way that some days are easier than others, It was certainly a struggle as a working mom of a baby to start this business and built it around the vision that I had for the future. I envisioned creating an enjoyable work environment that promoted excellent work product and representation for our clients along with a good quality of life for our employees. We opened in late 2018. By early 2020, we were faced with the challenges brought on by the pandemic. I saw that moment as an opportunity to recruit new employees interested in working remotely under our business model. It allowed us to keep overhead and expenses low while the business grew. Additionally, learning to manage and delegate, as is the case for many business owners, was a challenge, particularly when doing so alongside family. As lawyers, we are trained as technicians in the law, but not necessarily as business owners, marketing experts, financial advisors, or even as managers. Consequently, I face challenges every day as I strive to add new tools to my toolbox that will assist me as a wife, mom, business owner, sister, supervisor, and manager.
My journey down this road while raising a family, growing a business, being involved in my community, and serving my clients is far from easy, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Quintana Law, PA?
We are a civil litigation law firm specializing in representing our policyholder clients in disputes with their insurance companies. We focus on assisting commercial and residential property owners who face sudden and accidental losses to their property as they try to navigate the insurance claims processes. We represent our client’s pre-litigation to resolve their claims and will assist them and advocate on their behalf all of the ways through trial as necessary. We provide personalized service to each of our clients, who often become like part of the family.
We are proud of being a women-run, family-run business. Additionally, we are proud advocates in our community who are always ready to fight for our clients. I take personal satisfaction in representing the interests of homeowners and business owners as they endeavor to contend with the tremendous resources and complicated processes generated by insurance companies.
The daughter of a public adjuster and a former insurance company attorney, I know the ins and outs of the insurance industry and I put that specialized knowledge to use when representing my clients.
