Exploring Life & Business with Azury Puig of PRIMERICA FINANCIAL SERVICES

Today we’d like to introduce you to Azury Puig.

Hi Azury, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Azury Puig, I am from Nicaragua. I came to the United States when I was 23 years of age with a bachelor’s in business administration and with the knowing that I needed to prove myself in this new environment. I went to a private school in Nicaragua where I learned French when I was 5 years old and did a French immersion program until I turned 12. Learning European history, music and being exposed to their philosophy of life made an impression on me and placed an intense desire to always learn more, dream more and be more wherever I go. Interestingly enough, I also have a very humble family who rose to a strong middle class by way of entrepreneurship thanks to my Grandmother Maria Reyes, she is undoubtedly the most fearless person I have ever met in my life. When I was in Managua, Nicaragua we all worked at our family’s flower shop and we had no days off, I learned as early as when I could help with flowers that working everyday was necessary for our business survival and growth. I appreciate the entrepreneurial experience my grandmother gave me but I also value learning strongly so I decided to do a Masters degree in Finance at FIU. Once graduated, after the economic collapse of 2008 and the years ahead, the economy was still recovering when I sought to be employed at a corporation and my aspirations were to get paid $80,oo0 in income due to my masters’. Unfortunately or fortunately for me, those kinds of jobs were not available and that let me into financial services where I started as an insurance agent, months later became a financial adviser and have accumulated great knowledge and other licenses through the years. I am now a fiduciary Investment Adviser with a series 65 with Primerica Advisers and own a branch of diverse financial services with my husband.
We live in Tamarac on a golf course but have kept the office in miami because miami has been great for us and because we treasure the business alliances we have with our colleagues.
We have two children, 6 and 10 years old, both boys who are very active in sports such as tennis, soccer, flag football and mixed martial arts. One of our children is also doing a Spanish immersion program, to keep the tradition and help maintain our roots.
Having experienced selling flowers in the family business in Managua, my strategy in financial services was to serve people other financial advisers wouldn’t even think of but whom I knew were very well positioned for cash flow so some of my first clients were small business owners in Sweetwater, mostly food vendors such as “Masayita mini market” and “Restaurante el Madrono” who are household names in my culture.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I didn’t know at the time because I really didn’t think of it but I later learned that what I did to start moving the business was a type of “guerrilla marketing” with interactive demonstrations and shameless exposure of my business. Asking people to allow me to introduce our services to them and their family members was just part of it, an “overly familiar” experience is what I was really going for where my goal was not to sell but to be considered as part of the family, an extension of their culture and beliefs and ultimately to serve as a bridge between that family and the financial concepts of this country.
I am thankful we were able to survive those first years since my immediate family was against my decision and decided not to participate until I demonstrated I could make something of myself. As years went by I started acquiring not only clients from the community but from within my family and close circle as well.

As you know, we’re big fans of PRIMERICA FINANCIAL SERVICES . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I don’t do public appearances beyond training our agents but I would like to say to any upcoming entrepreneur, male or female, old or young, from any background that the vision you have in your heart is stronger that the temporary setbacks, those are just there to refine your aim. If there is anything you have dreamt of with a burning desire is because your imagination is leading you into the fulfillment of your potential and the only thing stopping you is other people’s lack of vision of who you really are. If I may use this time to recommend anything, I would recommend you learn who you are, what are your gifts and talents, what moves you and define with clarity what you’re willing to exchange for the vision you’ve seen in your heart. I have good news, some of you will just have to change Netflix for reading and growing but there might be those who will have to commit a little bit more, good news is those who feel the pain of the exchange are more prone to push themselves for the result because holding the goal in your hand will give you options to never have to do again. The fight moving forward never ends but it does take new shapes and one of our challenges in choosing our next level is that we must take on the new level of growth with a renewed enthusiasm. If you are capable to command enthusiasm at any moment of your performance, the goal will be yours.

How do you think about luck?
I think the luckiest strike I have ever had in my life was to have been born in a post revolutionary third world country with a liberated woman who led me to believe it is my duty and my privilege to keep moving forward in life. My grandmother was my lucky star and she not only raised me, she mentored me and taught me things in life and business most adults don’t learn until later in life.
