Today we’d like to introduce you to Alejandra Gonzalez-Rizo.
Hi Alejandra, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My family is from Mexico and I grew up in South Carolina. I was raised in a lower-middle-class household with two sisters. My mom introduced me to thrift shopping because we didn’t have much money for clothes and shoes. At first, I hated it because I couldn’t keep up with the fashion trends my friends could afford but then I came across a used Hollister polo at the local Salvation Army. I think that was when I fell in love with the thrill of the hunt.
Later on, I started educating myself on how much clothes go to landfill. Then with the education, I started to educate myself on fashion trends, and then slowly I started shopping for my friends. That encouraged me to start shopping to resell because great brands and styles are always in demand. That is how I started SecondHandTesoros.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not always been smooth. The pandemic made it hard to source clothes because many people did not trust secondhand clothing. Also, when I started SecondHandTesoros, I didn’t realize how much money you have to invest. Sometimes clothes don’t always sell quickly so you have to be very mindful of the clothes that you invest in or else you’ll be in a financial deficit for a while.
We’ve been impressed with SecondHandTesoros, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I specialize in reselling mid to top-tier luxury brands that include Rag & Bone, Lululemon, Alo, Madewell, Eileen Fisher, Christian Louboutin, etc. I mostly sell online on reselling platforms like Poshmark and Mercari as well as selling on the live auction app called WhatNot. I also, resell clothes for clients which allows me to gain commission while also putting money back into my client’s pockets.
What’s next?
I am working toward making reselling my full-time job. I would love to expand to work with influencers and sell their clothing or help them source. I would also love to open a storefront to sell on consignment but that will likely be in the far future.
