Exploring Life & Business with Joshua Kaufman

Joshua, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Growing up in Miami, I became immersed in the construction and real estate industry, a family passion for over 90 years. I spent time as a young child on all sorts of cool projects; restaurants, custom homes, even some zoo exhibits. I always figured I would follow in my father’s footsteps and get involved with the family business – construction. With only 4 classes to earn my degree in construction Management from FIU, the Great Recession came and I questioned my career path. Ultimately, I changed things up and double majored in Finance and Real Estate.

Throughout the years, I always found myself interested in business. I’ve grown up as a competitive bowler. In college, I started a bowling management company with my best friend. The business plan we used as our guiding principle actually won us one of the divisions in the Miami Herald Business Plan Challenge. With my interests in so many areas, bowling, real estate, and construction, I found myself looking for a more entrepreneurial career path, real estate brokerage opened its doors.

Today, I’m the principal of the Joshua Kaufman Group at Compass. We’re based out of Coconut Grove and focus on all facets of real estate, both residential and commercial. We do have a passion for land though!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I believe any entrepreneurial path has its bumps in the road. I realized long ago that a corporate job was not for me. Without the structure given to me I had to learn to create it. Self-accountability is probably one of the greatest lessons I have learned along the way.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Got Land? I say it jokingly, but land is one of my passions. When I first got into this business, I was lucky enough to work alongside an industry veteran who specialized in land sales. I gained a perspective that all real estate, regardless of its use, have land underneath. As a focus it’s enjoyable doing something that lets me combine my experiences and knowledge in construction, business, and investment.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I’m a competitive bowler. I’ve been bowling my whole life, traveled during middle school, high school, and even college. To this day, I still continue to bowl. I’m also the proud dog dad of Lola, the Real Estate Retriever! Lola is an 18-month-old Golden Mix, and we spend our afternoons at Blanche Park in Coconut Grove.
