Evan Weisberg on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Evan Weisberg. Check out our conversation below.

Evan, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
When I finish my tasks for the day, I love to go and watch classic movies that are before my time. It gives me a chance to see what life was like before I was born and I find that the acting is much better. In the past year, I have probably watched over 200 movies. It is interesting because I don’t watch any television besides this. It makes me happy as it gives my mind a break from work and lets me unwind in a positive way.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Evan Weisberg and I am 39 years old. I run a private tutoring service called Tutors Who Care. The journey of Tutors Who Care began in 2011 when I landed my first client. I had already been in the tutoring industry, working for other companies since 2008. From 2011-2018, I self-operated Tutors Who Care in three major counties in South Florida, Broward, Dade, and Palm Beach. I had around 70 paid hours a week with over 100 hours including drive time. In 2018, I hired my first tutor and I would have to say that it was a great decision but a very difficult one. Due to the fact that I had to trust someone with my business that I worked so hard to build, I was extremely reluctant to take this leap. However, I learned to get over my trust issues and made sure I was prepared for whatever obstacles could come my way with this new venture. In 2020 when the pandemic began, I saw the opportunity to expand Tutors Who Care throughout the entire state of Florida. So, this is exactly what I did. I offered our services in about 20 major cities in Florida after hiring hundreds of tutors in all of these different areas. Our tutoring is done in-person and normally at the homes of the students. So, we took the proper precautions and continued to tutor with this format when many other companies chose to only provide remote tutoring. Tutors Who Care specializes in working with students who have learning challenges or special needs, which presents an issue when it comes to remote tutoring. Many of these students focus much better with in-person tutoring and it is a much more effective method overall for them. Taking those risks and sticking to our formula proved to be extremely beneficial for us. Just recently, Tutors Who Care became a national franchise! We are currently offering franchises to potential franchisees outside the state of Florida.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
Being that I was able to run my business virtually anywhere, as long as I had cell-service and my handy laptop, I had the opportunity to travel to over 105 countries while operating Tutors Who Care. I was fortunate enough to see places that were much different than anything I had ever known. At that time, the materials, status, and superficial possessions that seemed to matter so much to everyone in the places that I lived previously, started to not seem that important anymore. From then on, I realized that we lived in such an excessive way due to social norms and societal approval, that there were many people I knew who were living lives based on what others wanted them to do, not truly what they wanted to do. I have always valued my independence and freedom over everything else, which is what inspired me to become an entrepreneur. However, these experiences made me an even better person and I developed perspectives about the world that have made me even more impactful, generous, and compassionate.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Throughout our adolescence, we place so much value on acceptance from our peers. I would let my younger self know that it is okay to be different and that it is actually a benefit. If you seek acceptance, you are just following the crowd. Followers are not the ones who create change or make a major impact, leaders are. When you are different or unique, you stand apart from the rest! Your perspectives, your unique qualities, and what makes you different makes you interesting. The fact that everyone doesn’t like you is a great thing too. This means you are being true to yourself and you will have much more inner happiness in the long run because of this. Embrace your differences and be proud of them, there are others that wish they could have your qualities and abilities that you are unaware of.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would say that I care most about the well-being of others and their happiness. I am in no way a people pleaser and I am more like a castle that is guarded with knights, a drawbridge, and a moat than an open book but I care about others. Life has put me in struggles that I faced all alone and I had to deal with pain in many ways that only strengthened me to become a better person. They would say Evan cares when no one else does. When no one picks up my calls and I really need some guidance or an ear to listen, Evan will answer. He will be honest with me and if it is my fault, he will make me accept the responsibility for my own actions. However, he will offer me wisdom from the mistakes he has made in his past and try his best to be understanding of the predicament I am in.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
As I mentioned previously, Tutors Who Care has recently become a national franchise. I plan to build up our business by selling franchises all over the country and eventually get acquired. It is likely that this will take anywhere from 5-10 years. There will be many hours, other obstacles, and a great deal of education required to accomplish this goal. Without patience and understanding how delayed gratification works, a goal like this could never be accomplished. However, it took many years to build the company to the level it is at now and if you are concerned with a specific time line, then being an entrepreneur is going to be a difficult path for you. Countless days of blood, sweat, and tears with what seems like little results is normal for me. As I have matured, I have learned very clearly that anything great is built over time and you don’t always get to see the fruits of your labor until the timeline mentioned in this question.
