Today we’d like to introduce you to Wesley Cantillo.
Hi Wesley, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started my own podcast, THE BLACK SHEEP PERSPECTIVE, almost three years ago and have currently reached a following of 1,400 subscribers on YouTube, as well as a few more hundred through other audio platforms. I opened up my own private training facility during the covid crisis on June 15, 2020. I give nothing but private sessions in Mixed Martial Arts, ranging from Muay Thai/Kickboxing to Boxing to Wrestling and even to Jiu-Jitsu, but also do private Strength & Conditioning training as well.
Like any business attempting an opening during such difficult times, my business struggled immensely at first, but as expected through hard work and dedication, I made it through the rough waters and have reached a nice level of success.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Podcasts will not make a profitable revenue until one has reached a significant amount of subscribers or has a strong sponsorship due to a certain level of popularity and algorithms. Therefore, it’s been all passion and expenses. The gym was barely covering its own overhead for the first six months due to covid scares and lack of financial security. Instead, more money was continuously spent on improvements and necessary equipment.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a Mixed Martial Artist who’s been training for over 20 years and coaching for ten. As an individual who is naturally an entrepreneur, I yearned to eventually open up my own gym and grow from there. Through that gradual process, I was influenced and suggested to start my own podcast due to my ability to always entertaining, great conversations while challenging average beliefs, though remaining respectful yet comedic. I knew I had a ‘gift of the gab’, but never entertained the thought of making more of it past regular conversations.
Through constant compliments and encouraging support about my coaching skills in fitness & MMA, along with so many other enthusiastic suggestions, my confidence grew enough to start one of the best-known podcasts in Miami, along with opening up my own private gym during such difficult times.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
