Today we’d like to introduce you to Vicky Montes.
Hi Vicky, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My vision will always be to turn people’s imagination into art. Art has been my passion since I am a little girl. Since I can remember, I paint, drawn, and make lines wherever I can. As I grew older my interest in fashion grew with me as well. Once I graduated from high school I started studying Architecture, but after a couple of years and different problems at my University, I had to change my career. This is when I started to study Graphic Design since it is related to art.
I lived in Venezuela in a town called Lecheria. One day my sister, who lives in Miami sent me a couple of markers so I could paint her some shoes and that is where it all clicked. I fell in love with the idea of telling personal stories thru clothing, personalizing it, and for it to become the owner’s favorite wear. Which made me come to the realization that “life is too short to wear boring accessories!”
After a couple of years of starting my brand, I decided to take it to Caracas, the capital. There my career really started. I did a collaboration with some brands and counties, even painting a mural. Shortly after I had to move back home together with the opportunity to come to the United States. Here I decided to continue with my brand and with the idea of my products, to make the world a more colorful place and have pieces with a personal touch that can tell individual stories. Making it my misión: To paint fun designs that tell stories.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been an easy road. I came from Venezuela, and although a beautiful country, it has lots of economic and social problems. Material isn’t easy to find and when you do they are very expensive. This made me lose lots of orders and therefore I couldn’t grow my business as I would have wanted it to.
A couple of months ago, I got the opportunity to come to this country for a better future and to start again. Although, it wasn’t easy to leave behind my family, my boyfriend, my friends, and my safe place. I have a dream and am here to make it happen. It’s time to color the world with happiness.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I paint everything that crosses my way, but I mostly like painting clothing and canvas. I have painted Greca, frames, wallets, books, morals, crosswalks, and many more. I am mostly known for personalizing shoes, designing your personal story on objects that help you walk every day toward your dreams.
Also known for using acrylic techniques. I am most proud of seeing people use my creations in their day-to-day lives.
My designs are unique because I involve the customers as much as possible in the creation. I really try to understand their life and transfer them into thier unique masterpiece.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Definitely customer service.
Talking to the customers to see what would make them happy, help them choose between the different customization options, colors, and designs, that’s the thing that makes Oh pair different and hopefully successful.
