Today we’d like to introduce you to Tom Falco.
Hi Tom, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been a cartoonist, I think cartoonists are born cartoonists. Along the way I was a printing broker, daily news editor and publisher, marketer and a few other things. But I’ve always been a cartoonist, ever since I could hold a crayon.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
After many years of trying for newspaper syndication, I realized that this is not the place to be these days. I was once published in hundreds of newspapers as part of a project King Features Syndicate did some years back. It was called “The New Breed” where they were grooming new cartoonists by publishing various single panel cartoons, I would submit cartoons and they would publish the ones they liked, along with many other cartoonists.
At that time my cartoons were being published in magazines and some books. But I was sidetracked by a business I started and I headed in another direction.
Today I publish daily online – where the readers are – and I think I am reaching just as many people as I would have by being published in newspapers, only I don’t have any strict deadlines, editors or anyone breathing down my back, which makes it so much easier to be my own boss and reach out to my readers in my own way.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I like to think my cartoons are set apart from others because I try not to be silly. I try to be cerebral. I write funny gags, but they are based on things I’m interested in like ancient Egypt, the gilded age, and history and culture, but also funny characters like cavemen, witches and the Frankenstein monster, who are recurring characters.
I like to keep the panels simple, with not much clutter; almost as if the performers are in a black box theater where there is only a table on the stage and a single photo on the wall.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
I had a wonderful childhood, I don’t know if I have any one favorite childhood memory.
