Today we’d like to introduce you to Star Galasyn.
Hi Star, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Star Galasyn, and I started writing stories when I was a kid. It started with short stories about my childhood pet and my favorite singer, and then I would do assignments for school, like essays. Then, in middle school, I started writing poetry, thanks to the encouragement of my English teacher. Eight years later, I have written over a thousand poems and branched out into short stories, essays, and thought pieces. In 2025, I published my first poetry collection, ‘All The Things in The Sky’, and have almost 1,000 followers across all my social media platforms. I am currently working on my second poetry collection, an anthology of short stories, and I run my own literary magazine, The Samhain Moon Literary Magazine. I am alost twenty-three years old and when I am not writing, I am hiking, walking my dog, or reading.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has certainly been a long and winding road to get where I am today: when I started writing poetry in 2018, I was at a very dark place in my life. I was fourteen years old, newly diagnosed with anxiety and severe depression, and lashed out at everyone and everything in my path, including my loved ones. Poetry gave me an outlet to express my complicated and often volatile emotions. Many times along the way I went through dry spells, not being able to write or be creative, but I always managed to drag myself out of the pits before they swallowed me. Then, when writing my first book to publish, I got so discouraged because of the difficulty of the project, and I put down the project for years, until early 2024, when I was inspired to begin again. Along the way I have faced discouragement and doubt, and thankfully always bounced back. I have my family, my friends, and my readers to thank for that.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a writer! I specialize in poetry, but also write short stories and essays! I am most known for my poetry. I have been published in over ten magazines and publications since 2022, including Poetry Nation (Eber and Wein), Marrow Magazine, Harrow House, and others. I am most proud of my poetry book, ‘All The Things in The Sky’. I worked on that project for a long, long time, and almost gave up on it. It’s the project I have dedicated the most time to over the years, and I am so happy it turned out the way it did. It is available on Amazon.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My advice for finding a mentor or networking is, obviously, being on social media; that is a nonstarter. I suggest following your favorite authors, poets, playwrights, etc., and keeping up with their work. I also suggest finding community by looking at hashtags and in community forums on Threads, Instagram, and Reddit. You can ask for advice easily and find helpful people with real answers. I have found that following fellow small creators or writers helped me see what I should do and how I can grow.
