Today we’d like to introduce you to Shani James.
Hi Shani, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My adventure in art and antique item appreciation began in 2011 while perusing around with my companion at the time. As our relationship developed, so did my passion for discovering these rare and beautiful treasures (falling deeply in love with both him and this new joy of mine). We found ourselves scavenger hunting around the globe and became regulars to most of the shops we found a special connection with.
I was committed to my corporate objective when there came a fork in my path. Faced with the option to continue on in the world of “business casual” where I always just seemed to standout or join an amazing society of true fashion appreciators and collectors. Well, I think it’s obvious now which directions I took.
In January 2016, I officially launched Knowstylegia as a way to share my experiences, knowledge, and most of all passion & appreciation for Vintage Style. Many are familiar with the word Nostalgia meaning: (A sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations.) This is the feeling I have when I discover, learn about, and purchase a piece from the 1920’s, 50’s, or 70’s for example. The spirit is like a friendly ghost that lives on in the fabric.
In 2018 Knowstylegia vintage collection was featured at LAFW as the first curator to present a runway show. I’ve also had the pleasure of working as a stylist for the likes of Shelia E., Estelle, & CeeLo Green. I continue to collect beautiful pieces in hopes to continue to raise awareness and appreciation for all things vintage.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ve always chosen the road less traveled, so it been a struggle at times to get others to see where the road is leading towards. But, I will say it feels great to know that I was ahead of curve in my decision to focus on wearing vintage in my day-to-day, on the red carpet, or placing on my clients as stylists. I can’t help but feel like others were watching from afar to see if my direction would lead to the future. And, I must say I can look around and see where I have inspired. That is truly gratifying and worth the extra mile.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I like to consider myself a connoisseur of fashion, but specifically vintage fashion. Sourcing the most rare and beautiful vintage pieces from around the world is my speciality. I love to reinvent fashion styles that most of our favorite designers today were inspired by while acknowledging the brilliant new wave of designers of today. What I am most proud of… That’s a hard one. But, if I had to say one thing it would be my dedication to vintage fashion and continuing to have foresight to see where the fashion industry is going. It’s not always easy being different, but it feels awesome being the first to do it. My ability to reinvent myself through my fashion choice is definitely what sets me apart. When I commit to a look, I own it!
Who else deserves credit in your story?
My love CeeLo Green has been my greatest motivator and supporter. Being a muse for him opened my eyes and heart to vintage fashion. He once said to me long ago, ‘they can put it on you, but can’t put it in you.” Meaning anyone can wear the clothes, but a rare few were born to be adorned in such unique and timeless fashion. Well, I guess you can say I was born for this. To this day, one of our favorite past times and bonding moments is window shopping and sourcing vintage fashion together. I love it.
