Daily Inspiration: Meet Sergio Lazo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sergio Lazo.

Hi Sergio, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I gained an interest in art very early on in my life. At around kindergarten age, I remember drawing complex murals on the walls of my room. Something which could’ve normally warranted punishment, my mom instead gave me more art supplies to work with, and the rest is history. I have been working as a full time professional artist for over 25 years. My art is something that is constantly evolving and with every collection, I work on improving my skillset and technical abilities. I didn’t receive any formal training in painting or drawing. I’ve spent many years working on developing my own unique style around musical themes as well as creating my signature characters. Although I my paintings range in size, I have recently shifted to larger scale works. I love the fluidity and freedom of painting on a larger canvas. While creating a new piece, I always put on one of my favorite records and pour everything into it.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like with most creative endeavors, it’s not always been easy. There are highs and lows, but the good has thankfully always outweighed any negativity. I’ve been fortunate enough to have a strong and supportive customer base. Throughout the years, I’ve ironically felt more pushback navigating the competitive nature of art spaces. Institutions or organized art spaces have somewhere along the way lost their essence. There’s been a cultural shift where art is now seen as a performance or social media grab rather than a form of expression like how I always viewed it.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in large format mixed media canvas paintings. I am known for a series of characters I developed, and in each piece, those characters tell a story about a different aspect of life. From the mundane to the more chaotic, each serves as a representation of something we have all experienced. Aside from my characters, I also focus on painting musical themes and guitars. I have a very peculiar style in which I paint and I am consistent with my overall vibe and technique. I’m proud to know my work can be easily identified. I’d like to think that what sets me apart from the rest is how I don’t look for other artists to copy or for inspiration. My work is 100% a reflection of how I view the world and how I want others to enjoy it.

What’s next?
I am constantly working on new pieces and currently have an upcoming collection set to launch in Fall 2026. Right now, one of my largest collections available outside of Miami is on display in Texas, and I’m planning to expand further out into the west coast within the next few years. I’m excited to continue to showcase my artwork to new audiences.
