Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Cruz
Hi Samantha, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I stumbled upon professional cooking right after Hugh school when I needed a job to make ends meet. I always grew up inside or near the kitchen; learning from my grandmother and my mother. They’re much better cooks than I am. Food is the most I’ve ever felt connected as an artist and an individual. It is my peace and my happy place.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not smooth at all. Kitchens are brutal. I can name countless times that a chef has made me cry in the walk in cooler or many occasions where the day was so stressful, I felt close to a breakdown. It’s tough being a female chef. You have to work harder for everyone’s respect; even when you’re so much better. You have to take more crap from other chefs with big egos; mostly men. You have to gain enough trust and respect to move up the ranks and become a leader.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Recreating classics with a fresh approach and exotic flare.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Teaching and watching people grow. There is nothing that makes me happier as a chef than a cook of mine excited to come show me something. I feel most proud when my team is happy.
