Daily Inspiration: Meet Reinaldo Ortiz

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Reinaldo Ortiz.

Reinaldo Ortiz

Hi Reinaldo, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.

Im Reinaldo Ortiz, known by many as “Zitro”, I’m a Director of photography, for me it all began when I was just a kid spending time with my grandfather, the original Zitro, as they refer to him—a man of many talents: musician, painter, aeronautical engineer, and sculptor, to name a few. Spending time with him as a child, I was amazed by his creative spirit. Witnessing his ability to create something that didn’t exist before with his hands and mind truly captured my attention from a very young age.

As time passed, I believe my own creative process blossomed through the creation of images. I pursued studies in mass communications, and during university, I fell in love with photography. With the guidance of amazing teachers, I dedicated my life to capturing picture for editorials, commercials and documentaries, among other projects. I enjoyed them all and endeavored to shoot as many projects as possible.

After several years of what I would consider fairly successful professional work, I felt a calling to experiment with moving pictures. Thus, I began delving into video production until I decided to pursue a master’s in Filmmaking and Screen Direction at Central Film School in London, UK. I cherished my time there and gained extensive knowledge about this art form.

Upon returning to my hometown, Caracas, I began directing commercials for prominent brands like Unilever, Ford, P&G, and various banks. I also took on the role of Director of Photography for these projects, which is when I truly fell in love and discovered my true passion.

Since then, I have filmed hundreds of music videos, commercials, documentaries and short films. Last year, I had the opportunity to shoot my first feature film, a horror movie for NBC/Telemundo and Amazon Studios. I live in Miami, which I proudly call home. I am grateful for the multitude of enriching experiences and opportunities that have come my way through work, which never feels like work at all.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?

Looking back, I wouldn’t describe it as an entirely smooth journey. Of course, immigrating to ta different country is never easy, and leaving behind family and friends is always a difficult choice. However, I was very focused on creating a better life for myself and my wife and was willing to work tirelessly for it. While I’ve invested a lot of effort and hard work, overall, the journey has been quite fulfilling.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

What I love most about my job is the opportunity to create every day. The creative process, I believe, is one of the most authentic expressions of humanity. The ability to conceive an idea and bring it to life never ceases to amaze me.

On every film set, I collaborate with the director to shape the look, style, and narrative of each project. I also thoroughly enjoy operating the camera and making decisions on its movement and positioning. Crafting frames is another aspect of my job that I deeply enjoy; there are countless ways to frame a shot but finding the one that perfectly encapsulates the story or narrative is a pursuit that truly engages my soul.

I’m primarily known for my work in music videos, having filmed for numerous esteemed artists such as Bad Bunny, Future, J Balvin, Maluma, Ricky Martin, Lil Baby, Lil Wayne, Christian Nodal, Luis Fonsi, Karol G, Becky G, and Sebastian Yatra, among others. What I’m most proud of is the passion and work ethic I bring to every project.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you would recommend our readers check out?

In terms of podcasts, I highly recommend Smartless and Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend; they never fail to make me laugh. As for books, I have a particular fondness for noir and crime stories. Currently, I’ve been listening to Diary of a CEO, a podcast that offers in-depth insights on various topics, primarily focused on personal and professional development.
