Today we’d like to introduce you to Monique Williams.
Hi Monique, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started writing when I was eight years old. I remembered journaling in my diary. This was my way to express my deepest and true moments without judgment. I then pursued an artistic career in blogging after I became non-verbal due to Papillary Thyroid Cancer in 2020; blogging became a creative and healthy outlet for me to express myself. And as far back as I can remember journaling and writing poetry has always been my go-to when I needed to express my feelings and emotions.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. I had surgery on July 2020 to remove cancerous nodules and scar tissues that were aggressively forming on the right side of my thyroid. When I awoke from surgery, I was completely mute! No sound returned and after extensive tests and months after the surgery; I am now diagnosed with Bilateral Chronic Vocal Fold Paralysis.
The struggles along the way were navigating the world being non-verbal. I had to find a way to communicate and find a healthy way to express myself. Writing has always been a form of expression for me whether it’s journaling or writing poems. However, I rediscovered that blogging became my new voice. It is therapeutic and a healthy outlet.
Blogging gives my heart, mind, and soul a place to be creative. Blogging ( new voice) is a platform that helps heal the trauma of losing my voice to cancer. It was not easy, It took me a while to adjust but I am learning to accept my new voice and to channel this energy into blogging. I overcame the challenge of this disability by journaling how I felt.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a writer. Blogging and vlogging sets me apart because it has given me a new voice to share my journey and story of being a cancer survivor. This platform form has given me the opportunity to chronicle my learning experiences. This sets me apart from others because blogging and vlogging allows my heart to speak freely. I am non verbal so these platforms let my voice be heard in unique ways.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up.
My favorite childhood memory is being featured in the local newspapers at 10 years old! It was a national poetry competition that I submitted and I won! I was so happy. I still have that clipping of my poetry laminated and framed. This was a great childhood memory that will be forever cherished! Priceless memories. Cherished moments…
