Daily Inspiration: Meet Melvin Burgos

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melvin Burgos

Hi Melvin, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started making songs November 2022. I spent the whole summer before wanting to make music but I always felt like I had no idea how to make music and I wasn’t talented enough and I could never do it. With the encouragement of my friends I decided to try it out and it went way better than expected. My goal was to make a song in a week and I used bandlab and their samples to make that happen. After making my first song I got addicted so my goal was to make an album in a week after having zero experience and that album ended up becoming Lemon. At first I wasn’t sure what to name that album but my friend told me about how she likes to eat lemons with salt and for some reason that was very funny to me and stood out in my mind so i ended up naming the album lemon because of that.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
While things are going better than I ever could have imagined things haven’t been always been smooth. I do struggle a lot with motivation at times because when I get stressed with things in my life such as family, school, or even just things from the past it makes me want to sulk and not create anything. Even though I do have three albums I still lack a lot of musical skills that I hope to gain one day, I’m currently considering taking a music production skill that way I can improve my skills and create music that feels truly mine.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’ve always felt strange calling myself an artist even though that’s what I am. Apart from music I also love photography, in fact my camera roll on my phone has over 220,000 photos because that’s how addicted I am to it. All my album covers are actually photos that I took myself which I’m very proud of. I think my love for photography stems from my mother since she was also a photographer and would have me as her little helper. She trained me to take good photos of her and also her clients. I remember one time I got to film a surprise proposal at an ice skating rink in New York City with her and that’s a very beautiful and cherished memory of mine. Besides that I also dabble in both music production and recently fashion design. Even though I have made lots of songs I don’t truly consider myself a music artist since I’ve had to rely on samples since I currently lack the skills to make music fully on my own. I’ve become interested in fashion design recently and I hope to one day start my own clothing brand. I’m still in the beginning stages but I have thought of a few designs that I think will turn out well. Something that I’m proud of and what I think sets me apart from others is my belief in myself to the point where it’s stubborn. I refuse to give up on my dreams and let my ideas stay in my head. Even when times get tough and I start to lose belief in myself I make sure to keep moving forward even if I have to stop and take a pause for a bit.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love all the art in Miami and the beauty in the city. No matter where I look I always see something beautiful and unique and being in this city has given me a lot of inspiration and motivation to create art that’s beautiful and that others will find inspiration or motivation in. The heat has to be the least favorite part of Miami. I grew up in New York so I’m used to the cold and that’s what I feel more comfortable in. I also feel like you can dress much better in the cold compared to the heat.
