Today we’d like to introduce you to Marti Moreland
Hi Marti , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up listening to the twinkling sound of my mother playing the harp, and eventually began playing the instrument myself. I loved everything about it from my first lesson; the history, the repertoire, and even the lore my teachers would share about the different schools of technique and how they’ve trickled down through generations of harpists. I never questioned that I wanted to dedicate my life to the instrument and make it my career. I completed my undergraduate degree in music performance with Dr. Jaymee Haefner at the University of North Texas in 2020, and my masters with Dr. Laura Sherman at the University of Miami in 2022. While studying for my masters, I fell in love and my partner and I welcomed our first child in the winter of 2023. Now, I am freelancing around Florida, honored to be doing what I love for a living.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
-I come from a very conservative, blue collar background. Playing the harp was considered a weird choice.
– the music scene is rapidly changing. It has been difficult knowing where I fit in and I’ve struggled over the years to know exactly how I would form my career.
– I’ve struggled with pretty severe anxiety throughout my life that has at times affected my playing.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I play the harp for orchestras in the area, events, weddings, and I teach. I am very passionate about making the harp more accessible, and empowering adult beginners to learn how to play.
I pride myself in crafting soundscapes for my clients that perfectly embody the theme of the event that they are having. I love to plan set lists with custom arrangements for each of my clients, making sure that their favorite songs are played at their event.
Something that sets me apart from others is my creativity in arranging and my enthusiasm for spreading the joy of harp.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
My passion for sharing the harp with others.
