Daily Inspiration: Meet Lex Cushman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lex Cushman.

Hi Lex, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have always had a passion for vivid hair. In middle school, I started coloring my own hair and quickly began doing all of my friends’ hair as well. When it came time to decide where I wanted to go to high school, there was no other option for me than our local vocational technical high school.

This is where I earned the hours needed for my cosmetology license. I graduated from Blue Hills Regional in 2018, the same year I passed my cosmetology license exam and officially started taking clients in the salon.

My Sophomore year I got my first job in a salon as a receptionist. This worked out well for me because I was able to gain a lot of experience watching the other girls work and was able to start building relationships with the other stylists and clients before being placed on the floor.

Over the last seven years, I have worked in a few commission salons, gaining experience and growing as a stylist. In October 2025, I made the transition to becoming an independent salon suite owner. This career shift has been the most rewarding experience, and I could not be more grateful.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As a student, I struggled with the idea that hair wasn’t “enough,” so after high school I went straight to college, where I graduated with two bachelor’s degrees from Bridgewater State University, one in Psychology and one in Social Work. While I was incredibly proud to be the first person in my family to attend college, it was difficult because it took s lot of time away from being behind the chair.

For a long time, I felt that if I hadn’t gone to college, I would be even further along in my career as a professional stylist than I am now.

I also believed that choosing to go independent somehow meant there was something wrong with me, that I just didn’t fit in anywhere. Looking back, I couldn’t have been more wrong. Since becoming an independent salon suite owner, I have built more meaningful connections within this industry than I ever did as a commission stylist.

Independent does not mean isolation, and that’s something I didn’t fully understand until I made the switch myself. I only wish I had taken the leap sooner. It has been the best decision for my career, and I’ve experienced more growth in the last six months since opening my suite than ever before.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a creative color specialist! In my salon suite, I provide vivid color transformations, high-contrast creative color placements, and premium hand-tied and tape-in extensions.

I am most proud of, and best known for, my vivid color transformations. My favorite things to do in the salon is paint rainbows! I have had so many clients ask me recently what my favorite color to do is and I always say rainbow!

What sets me apart is my ability to bring my clients’ hair dreams to life while still prioritizing the integrity and health of their hair, all while creating the best experience and vibes possible. I love helping my clients feel more like themselves by making them look the way they feel on the inside.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
So many people in my life deserve credit for helping me become the stylist and person I am today. My cosmetology teachers, Nancy Fredendall and Janice LaVoie, as well as my very first boss, Henri Gough, were huge support systems for me while I was in school and just starting out in this industry. They helped me see the value not only in my work, but in myself as well.

At my first salon, I also met my first two mentors in the industry: Ann Malamphy and Danielle Flanagan. They were two incredible stylists who supported me like I was their own daughter. It truly was the best of both worlds, one was an outstanding cutting expert, while the other is an amazing creative color specialist. Having such a well-rounded support system at the beginning of my career helped shape me into the stylist I am today.

I also want to thank my support system outside of the salon. Today, my partner is my biggest supporter, and so much of what I’ve accomplished would not have been possible without him. From helping me set up my salon suite, to constantly delivering products I need, to helping me keep track of all my finances, he has supported me through every step of this journey. Having someone who supports me and believes in me so deeply has made all the difference.
