Today we’d like to introduce you to Kalunda Hilton.
Hi Kalunda, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
From childhood, coloring has been my favorite pastime. Coloring gave me the spark to want to create something more with the use of color. I decided in 2017 to get serious about my artwork and formed KJANAE INC. I started attending networking events, connecting with like-minded individuals, and positioning myself for success.
I attended one event that would change the course of my art career in 2018—I saw a quote at the event that stayed with me which says, “Trust only movement. Life happens at the level of events, not of words. Trust movement.” By Alfred Adler. It was not always easy to think I could be successful at selling artwork or making that a business. I had to get busy with who I am as an artist.
Often, I was juggling my full-time job and still being able to do live paintings, sell my work at different locations and fulfilling customers’ request for customized orders. I knew that moving it would cause an activation— doors of opportunity started opening, I was receiving emails and phone calls to be a part of events.
Great things happen when you move, even when you don’t feel like anything will happen; you have to trust that every step you make is a part of the process in the makeup of a masterpiece.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I learned that roads are not always paved smooth on your journey. There will be lessons along the way that will teach and build character. To be tried and tested is only meant to bring out the best in you. There were times I didn’t sell my artwork, and there were times when I was let down by others.
When there was silence and I felt like nothing was happening—I would still create, be supportive and show up for others. I was planting seeds, trusting that one day my harvest would come. I had to keep going.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a visual artist who creates of kind pieces for any area in the home, office, or place of business. I create wearable and hangable art, personalized or customized. My artwork is nature-oriented and full of color that conveys something meaningful. I’m not much of a talker but what I create speaks more, a little of who I am is represented in my work. I specialize in ink drawings, acrylic painting, and mixed media.
I’m known for the beauty of details; whether intense use of plays with color, brush strokes, or the meticulousness in design with a penI am most proud of starting my own business entitled KJANAE INC in 2017–which activated me to get serious about creating with purpose. I strive to place my imprint upon each body of work that I create, so the masses at large recognize my unique style and proficiency. The details in my work are what sets me apart.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Tenacity. It helps to know what your purpose in life is and when you do, you stay true to yourself and ensure that by any means necessary you make sure you stay the course— so your purpose can be fulfilled. I learned that I have everything I need inside of me, to move forward regardless of circumstances.
And although there will be delays, failures, setbacks and disappointments, one thing is for certain—in the midst of it all, my name does not change neither does the purpose attached to it.
