Today we’d like to introduce you to Judith Carlin.
Hi Judith, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I currently live and work in Miami, Florida after living in New York City for over forty years. Originally I worked as an actor and expanded into writing and directing. One day, I suddenly felt a mad desire to paint. Something I could do from beginning to end all by myself, anywhere, anytime. I like that a painting doesn’t need to be seen, read, or heard for any required stretch of time. One glance and there you have it, an instantaneous experience.
When people ask me which art form I care for the most, my answer is it’s all the same thing. Exploring the human condition and the stories that come out of that. When I paint I feel like I’m acting, writing, and directing all at the same time. Creating not only the characters and the story but bringing them to life on canvas.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Hmmm, I’m not on a smooth road. My road is full of booby traps. I’m constantly exploring and wondering if my new work in my new medium is as interesting as my old work in my old medium. I go through this with every change, whether it’s oil, acrylic, oil and acrylic, freehand digital painting, or freehand digital painting with oil and/or acrylic. Then I ultimately decide not to worry whether the work is good or bad and just follow the new road that’s calling me.
Another struggle is my desire to push my style and yet still get the meaning across. Some of the external struggles are people upset with some of my subject matter and wanting to argue with me about it. I don’t argue with them nor do I defend my work. I understand that what I paint is not for everyone and that’s okay with me.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a big believer in the power of art and that art can change the world. I specialize in and am known for tackling social issues in our current world and how they are affecting people. If I had to categorize myself I would call myself a humanitarian artist or an artivist. I’ve had people tell me that my work has resonated with them and has given them the courage to confront certain issues in their lives. This, I am very proud of.
Since artists are all unique in their own way I don’t know what sets me apart. I don’t worry about that. Maybe I should. What I do have is a desire to constantly learn. My background is in traditional mediums but I have expanded to freehand digital art and would like to learn how to do 3D generative art.
How do you define success?
Being able to paint every day.
