Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Campbell.
Hi Jay, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born in Jamaica and moved to Florida at the age six, and I’ve been here ever since. My nail journey started in 2020, and I became licensed in 2021—but my real beginning was much humbler than people expect. I was literally doing nails in my mom’s backyard. Anyone in this industry knows how tough that is, but it built my resilience and pushed me to take my craft seriously.
From there, I worked in a variety of salons, including Black-owned and Korean salons, which helped me sharpen my skills and understand different techniques and client expectations. Along the way, I noticed a gap in the industry—clients weren’t always getting a personalized, one-on-one experience.
That realization changed everything for me. Today, I run my own private suite where I focus on creating a luxury, intimate experience. My clients don’t just come for nails—they come for the full vibe: hookah, food, drinks, gifts, and a space where they feel valued and relaxed.
Like many in this industry, my growth came from making mistakes, learning from them, and constantly refining my craft. Now, I’ve reached a point where I’m proud to be recognized as one of the top nail techs in Florida, working with a range of clients—including celebrities like Vybz Kartel.
My story is really about starting with what I had, staying consistent, and turning a passion into a full experience.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges has been navigating social media. In a place like Miami, there are so many nail techs, and a lot of people rely on paid promotions—buying views, followers, or engagement. As someone who built my clientele organically, that can make it harder to stand out, even when your work speaks for itself. But I’ve stayed consistent because I believe real talent and passion always rise to the surface.
Another challenge was much more personal. In 2022, I experienced the loss of my great grandmother—one of my biggest supporters and motivators. That was a very difficult time for me, and it’s something I still carry with me today. Instead of letting it stop me, I’ve used it as fuel. Everything I do now is with her in mind.
That experience also shaped how I see this journey. Not everyone will always have their support system, so I always encourage other nail techs to keep pushing, no matter what. Stay focused, keep perfecting your craft, and don’t give up on your vision.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a licensed nail technician specializing in recreational sets, pedicures, and total nail reconstruction. Over time, I’ve really focused on not just perfecting my technique, but creating an experience that clients can’t get everywhere else.
What I’m most proud of is my growth—both professionally and personally. When I look back at where I started and compare it to where I am now, it’s a full-circle moment. Beyond the artistry, I take pride in knowing I’ve been a part of some of my clients’ most important moments—whether it’s birthdays, celebrations, or major life events. Being trusted with that means everything to me.
What truly sets me apart is the level of care and connection I bring. I offer a private, one-on-one experience where my clients feel comfortable, valued, and heard. It goes beyond nails—I create a space where they can relax, unwind, and be themselves. From personalized touches like gifts, to offering hookah, wine, and refreshments, I make sure every appointment feels like an experience, not just a service.
At the same time, I build real relationships with my clients. Sometimes I’m a nail tech, sometimes I’m a listener, a supporter, or just someone they can talk to. That balance of skill, energy, and genuine connection is what keeps people coming back.
And honestly—I bring a vibe you just can’t duplicate.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
My advice for finding a mentor is to be intentional. Look for someone who will truly hold you accountable, challenge you, and actually teach you—not just someone with a title. It’s important to find a mentor whose energy matches yours, someone you genuinely respect and can see yourself learning from long-term.
When it comes to networking, you have to put yourself out there. There are so many opportunities in this industry, especially events like the Premiere Orlando Beauty Show, which I’ve attended multiple times. Being in spaces like that allows you to connect with other professionals, learn new techniques, and stay inspired.
What’s worked best for me personally is finding a mentor who created a strong community. I’m part of a group where we’re held accountable, constantly learning, and encouraged to show up and grow. There’s no gatekeeping—just genuine support and a shared goal of leveling up, which is so important in an industry as big as this one.
At the same time, I always tell people to stay aware. Not everyone has pure intentions, and there are people who take advantage of others who are eager to grow. Protect your energy, do your research, and align yourself with people who truly want to see you win.
