Today we’d like to introduce you to Isabella Casamento Hans Hagen Arndt
Hi Isabella Casamento, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My fiancé, Hagen, and I embarked on our entrepreneurial journey about ten months ago, driven by a shared passion for the yachting industry. Hagen boasts nearly a decade of experience in this dynamic field, while I transitioned from a marketing background into yachting three years ago, prompted by the shifts brought on by COVID-19.
We were determined to carve out a path that allowed us to thrive professionally while maintaining our relationship, so we explored opportunities that would let us both work together and return home to each other each night. This led us to an exciting niche: managing yachts for private owners. Our venture took off as we began overseeing refits and expanding our services.
A turning point came when Hagen connected with an experienced marine diesel professional, eager to lend his expertise in engine repairs and overhauls. This partnership opened doors for us, allowing us to tackle engine work and related tasks across Florida and the Caribbean.
Starting with no capital posed significant challenges, yet we persevered. We still manage yachts to supplement our income while pouring resources into our marine engine business. Our passion for managing boats and the rewarding work of repairing yachts fuels our dedication.
In addition to our primary focus, I also engage in interior cleaning and stewardess work for private clients. I genuinely enjoy this aspect of the business, and the additional income helps us stay afloat during quieter periods. Every day is an adventure, and we’re excited to see where this journey takes us!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been a challenging journey for us, and we’re still navigating the complexities of maintaining multiple income streams. The insurance required to access marinas is prohibitively expensive, with each marina having its own unique requirements. Some facilities are completely out of reach for us; for instance, we need a $4 million policy to enter certain marinas, while we’re currently operating with a $1 million policy.
We often find ourselves in tough situations, sometimes having to part ways for weeks to take on charters just to generate the extra cash needed to keep our business afloat. This can mean weeks without time together or even the chance to go out on a simple date, as we need to save every penny for unexpected expenses that life throws our way.
Despite the hurdles, we remain hopeful for the future. We’re eager to see our business grow so we can invest in marketing and spread the word about what we offer.
What sets us apart is our personable approach. Our clients appreciate our dedication, and we aim to convey that same commitment to future customers, showing them that we genuinely care about their vessels. We believe that as our visibility increases, so will our opportunities to connect with more wonderful clients!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We specialize in comprehensive overhauls of engines, generators, and both inboard and outboard systems, positioning ourselves as a true one-stop shop for all vessel needs. Our expertise allows us to tackle virtually any requirement, and we’ve built a robust network of contacts to ensure that, even if a project falls outside our skill set, we can connect our clients with the right professionals.
In addition to our technical services, we thoroughly enjoy managing yachts for our clients. Our offerings include weekly wash-downs and general maintenance, all tailored to create a feasible program that meets the diverse needs of our clientele. Many of our clients are based overseas, which makes our role in looking after their vessels all the more essential.
On a personal note, I also find great joy in stewardess work, where I can offer a unique touch by providing cooking services for clients who prefer a more intimate dining experience without the expense of hiring a chef. Cooking is a passion shared by both Hagen and me, and we love bringing that enthusiasm to our work!
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I’ve certainly embraced some significant risks along the way! Transitioning from a marketing degree to jumping aboard a yacht was a bold move, inspired by my desire to be close to Hagen, who had already established himself in the industry. Leaving my stable career behind for this adventure was daunting, especially since I’ve always struggled with seasickness! I never imagined I’d be working on boats, but with the help of prescribed medication, I’ve managed to mitigate the symptoms—though I still feel it when the seas get rough.
Hagen has made incredible sacrifices to support our journey together. He left his home country and family behind in pursuit of a better life, and since I entered his world, he has worked even harder to create the foundation for our future and start a family together.
His dedication is unwavering; he puts in long hours and navigates the stresses that come with the yachting industry, all while facing the myriad challenges life throws our way. Through it all, he has been my steadfast rock. His willingness to take risks for our well-being and to ensure our business thrives speaks volumes about his character and commitment. I couldn’t ask for a better partner on this adventure!
All the hard work we’re putting in now is ultimately paving the way for our future together, with the hope that we can marry sooner rather than later!
