Today we’d like to introduce you to Helen Fortune.
Hi Helen, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My love of beauty began in the Trinidadian hair salons I often visited as a child. I bared witness to what success looked like up close & made a vow at an early age to use beauty as inspiration & open my very own salon. With over 30 years of experience in the hair care industry spanning from Trinidad to the US, I have had the privilege of having an impressive client roster that includes A-List celebrities, International clients and my top tier Local clientele. I firmly believe a black woman’s crown is her glory. My craft allows me to change lives and touch souls.
Helen so Fierce Artistry is my childhood dream finally brought to life. It’s taken a lot of faith and perseverance to get here but with God, everything has surpassed my expectation, and to think this is only the beginning.
My salon is a members-only luxury spa-like experience. Each client is catered to and pampered. I have taken all the extra steps to make sure that when a client enters Helen so Fierce Artistry, they are at ease and ready to embark on a journey of transformation.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
They say anything worth having is worth fighting for. I have beat the odds. Any immigrant will tell you that moving to a new country alone with nothing but hope and a dream isn’t ideal but if you remain focused and remember your reason for the sacrifices, you can accomplish anything.
Between motherhood, navigating moving from New York to Miami shortly after just relocating to the states and continuing to pursue my passion, there were a lot of obstacles in the beginning.
Over time I’ve built an amazing clientele that have been with me from the booth, the garage salon, the suite, and now at Helen so Fierce Artistry Salon and I make sure that they know I appreciate them every step of the way.
My salon was built with them in mind. Making sure that I gave them the very best of everything. When I had to go back and forth with the city about permits and policies or the contractors about specific details, I was fighting for them. Yes, the salon was my dream but the Helen so Fierce experience is all about them, my clients deserve to be spoiled.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Master Stylist who is healthy hair-focused and has created the signature precision cut that has made Helen so Fierce Artistry one of the most sought after Black-owned salons in the Miami area. We pride our service on providing clients with exclusivity, education on hair health and maintenance, and the best in-salon experience. The mission of the Helen so Fierce brand is to revolutionize how successful black women unapologetically prioritize their mental, emotional, & professional well-being through aesthetic elevation.
How do you think about luck?
I don’t believe in luck but more so God. He has placed the right people in my path at every turn to help guide and direct me. Entrepreneurship is not something you can do alone. You need a team of people who know the things you aren’t familiar with and have your best interest at heart.
