Today we’d like to introduce you to David Spangler.
Hi David, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved from New York to Florida in 1985. I had been working as a song writer and music producer in NYC for several years and wanted to transfer to a more kid friendly place when my wife got pregnant. I established myself and my music activities in Florida, raised 4 kids and after working in music education and founding Lovewell Institute for the Creative Arts to have some more financial security, I found my own professional music career taking off once again. I love living in South Florida but now I have to travel all over to keep up with my projects. My 4 kids and their kids love coming home to Florida to visit.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Is any road ever a smooth road? Not in my experience. In fact the title of my musical now set to open in March 2026 is HARD ROAD TO HEAVEN. No it’s not been easy but mama never told me it was going to be easy. I learned that the best I could do would be to enjoy the ride when I can, and survive the rest of the journey. I’ve learned much about resilience, persistence, patience and forgiveness. And especially gratitude. So the rough road has lead to a rewarding destination.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I had a formal education in music which came in handy but not enough to satisfy the way I wished to express myself. I can write a song or a fugue, I’ve learned to write decent lyrics, I can orchestrate, arrange and produce music for various genres and entertain myself (and occasionally others) at the piano. I’ve learned to write plays and screenplays and sometimes direct stage productions. I’ve been told I’m a poet, but I’m more comfortable being called a storyteller.
Any big plans?
Yes. I seem to have arrived at an inflection point in my life and career. I’m happier, more relaxed and confident, but still somewhat confused and frustrated about the future.
It’s now more about what do I really want rather than how am I going to get what I think I want. I’m trying to embrace the complexity of life without the complications.
