Today we’d like to introduce you to Bianca Taylor.
Hi Bianca, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is Bianca Taylor. I am currently a second-year medical student at FIU HWCOM with the goal of becoming a psychiatrist.
As a black woman, I have seen a great need for more people of color within the medical field, especially in the field of psychiatry. People of color have a unique experiences within our society and a need for mental health professionals that can understand their unique concerns and perspectives.
I hope to help build that resource of mental health professionals for our community.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road.
My family does not have a lot of money, so I knew I would have to work hard to get to where I am now. Throughout college, I worked multiple jobs to help support myself through school.
I applied for scholarship after scholarship, just to try and reduce the financial load a little. However, without the emotional support and consistent motivation from my family, I would not be where I am today.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Currently, I am a second-year medical student at FIU with the goal of becoming a psychiatrist. I am most proud of my ability to influence others as a future physician.
I continue to mentor students that are interested in becoming physicians, providing advice and motivating them to pursue their dreams. I also have a strong love for fitness and health and began a fitness Instagram (@biancaalexisfitness) during college to help motivate me and others.
Since starting medical school, I went through a huge transition, where I had to learn to balance both my hobbies and the rigor of medical school. I used my platform to show others that it is possible and to motivate other medical students or professionals to value their mental health and fitness throughout our rigorous education.
We’d love to hear what you think about risk-taking?
I definitely consider myself a risk taker. Just attempting to become a doctor has become a risk. The cost of medical school, along with the long nights of studying. Sometimes I feel like I am missing out on a lot.
However, I have always believed that the greatest successes come from things that make you unsure or uncomfortable. When applying for medical school, I was so nervous that I wouldn’t make it, or I wouldn’t be able to afford it if I did get in.
But I looked at all the things I didn’t think I would be able to achieve – maintaining high grades while in school, working multiple jobs, and passing the MCAT. No matter what obstacle I face, I succeeded. In the end, you never know unless you try.
