Today we’d like to introduce you to Virginia Le Fay
Hi Virginia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am a self-taught professional makeup artist based in Miami, FL. I derive much of my aesthetic from my love, respect, and exposure to opera, theater, and cinema throughout my youth in my native Spain. By combining these forms of art and transforming ‘moments’ in them with my makeup tools, I have finally found my creative expression.
I have experience in print, video, fashion, runway and bridal. My background includes musical theater and a Bachelor of Science in Motion Picture Production and Art Photography from the University of Miami, in which I gained experience working both on stage and behind the lens. Upon graduation I joined the world of M.A.C. Cosmetics breaking away on my own after five and a half years.
Growing up music was my first love, little did I know that the years I spent on stage doing my makeup as a performer would organically lead me into this industry! I have been an agency represented freelancer since 2008.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. Being in any creative field is a non-linear journey. It is unlike becoming a doctor or a lawyer where the steps are all laid out. The fashion/beauty industry is all about networking & location, As a freelancer we are our own public relations, agent, accountant, marketing director, etc…so I’ve learned a lot along the way through trial and error. Situations like asking for payment were initially a challenge, since having to invoice & secure reasonable rates is always uncomfortable for creatives. Having to do a lot of jobs for free in order to build a portfolio was also a difficult, yet a necessary part of networking.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an agency represented professional makeup artist focusing mainly in the fashion industry. I specialize in working with models & brands as opposed to personal clients or bridal. I am known for my creative editorial looks and clean beauty makeup. What sets me apart from others is my background. I did not set out to be a makeup artist initially. I was in musical theater as a performer & I attended film school. I believe since having worked on stage & behind the camera, I have an edge on other artists since I know how lighting works and how to best work behind the scenes.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I like best about Miami is the diversity of people. Also, because we are a smaller market (as opposed to NYC & Los Angeles) we have less resources so this aspect has made me a lot more resilient & a better problem solver.
What I like least about my city is that there is little room for growth. Once you reach a certain level you will have to leave in order to grow, otherwise you reach a plateau. Also, since clients come down here to shoot mainly outdoors we are heavily reliant on the weather. South Florida is very unreliable and often photo shoots are canceled because of the rain.
