Today we’d like to introduce you to Valerie Seeve.
Hi Valerie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started the community garden in Key Biscayne because I love gardening and I saw this as a way to bring people in our community together while working with nature.
My friends Cynthia Pastuskovas, Carolina Trovo and Augustina Blumetti joined me and helped me transform my idea into a tangible plan.
Now, with the support of many members of the Key Biscayne community, all the way up to the mayor, we have built a beautiful oasis.
We gather twice a week with volunteers from across the community who help us plant, maintain and harvest more than 150 varieties of herbs and vegetables.
Most importantly, the garden is now a place for people of all ages and backgrounds to come together.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been pretty smooth.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I used to be a kindergarten teacher in New York, but focused on being a home maker when I had children. My children are now both attending college out of state. When they left the house, I had more time to pursue my hobbies and passion for gardening.
Any big plans?
We want to coordinate with other communities and try to distribute our produce to an even wider community. We also want to show people that they can build their own gardens in their own homes or apartments.
